Title: Red, case clear, knobbly vase. Czech, Japan, thoughts please?
Post by: Steve in Cumbria on October 03, 2022, 03:15:56 PM
Hi all.

Recent charity shop find. Red inner, cased in clear.

Approx. 8" high x 2.5" across the base.

Base is concave and polished - I've underexposed the final pic to try and hold detail.

First thoughts were Japanese, but now wondering if Czech perhaps? No sig that I can find.

TIA,

Steve

That's a pretty extreme looking knobbly vase! I've not seen one like that before. I do think the colour makes Japanese more likely then Czech and your first instincts were correct, but difficult to know for sure.

Yes, I did various searches, in all the usual places, before posting here, but couldn't find one even close.

I seem to have developed a knack for locating the unusual ;-)

Update: suggestion from Japanese Glass FB group is possibly Sanyu. I've had a good look at Sanyu vases, and whilst I still can't find an exact match for the design, the base looks a very good match to several that I've seen, so in the absence of anything further, I'm going with that for now, as a "highly likely". Any further suggestions welcome of course.
