Title: Unsigned strapped cylinder Mdina??
Post by: LEGSY on December 04, 2022, 03:14:00 PM
Found a pair of cylinder vases recently both unmarked i think both were made in Mdina
glassworks but as not signed i thought i would share pictures. The taller is quite unusually
colored with blue strapping same color as whitefriars strapping. And has a small polished
pontil scar the other in last picture is polished flat. Both have a nice look on a shelf i might
start a cylinder collection. I was wondering on dating them if possible thanks
p.s. heights are 6 3/4" + 4 1/2"

I wonder if it’s worth looking at Whitefriars studio range pieces with the taller one ,I know nothing about them mind !

The taller one is a very early piece, made during Harris/Boffo period. Quite scarce.
I think the smaller one is probably very early too, from the plain decor and another "non-standard" shape and size., experimental while developing the shapes and sizes that finally went into production.
Nice one. (nice two?)  ;D ;D ;D

There's a pic of my small collection of them here. (jump up a couple of posts)

It's nice to be the bearer of good news.  ;D These small slim cylinders really are rather special.  8)
I don't think the other piece is quite as interesting artistically, but its in line with the "plainer" teal used in tricorn bowls and small globe vases made early on. Yellow bubbly interior with a teal casing.

I thought I had photos of another just like your shorter teal vase but no joy, however just checked and it is the same size as these two:

Very well remembered.
Helping to confirm the notion that the smaller one is very likely to be early too.

Thanks John i noticed on the pictures you linked to a pair of vase with rare Amethyst in the lower section
of the piece, That same color i think  is on the bottom of the strapped cylinder vase if my eyes are looking
at it right.. Those look lovely by that way you both need to do an Early Mdina book between yourselves :)
