Title: An unidentified glass item with the figure of a man.
Post by: Mytkhailo on February 16, 2023, 11:51:21 AM
I am new to this forum. So I apologize if I am doing something wrong.

I have a glass object that looks like a bottle stopper, but I couldn't find anything similar on the internet.

The object is a dome-shaped base with a human figure. It looks like a politician or a scientist. Very detailed - with folds of clothes, facial features and hair. The glass has a slightly blue tint. It is quite thick. There are air bubbles inside. My personal opinion is that it was made in the 18th century in England. But, of course, I could be wrong.

I would be grateful for help in identifying it.

Hi, do you have measurements as it looks too big for a stopper, what about a jar lid? Pictures from different angles  may also help. Regards Mike

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your reply!
I`ve attached two additional pictures.

The hole diameter is 3.5 cm.
The depth is 4 cm.

I hope they could help in idenrification.

Thanks!

Thanks for the extra helpful photos it’s certainly unusual and interesting I quite like figural pieces but I don’t recognise it , and I’m non the wiser to its purpose.  I’ll have to go and investigate. Cheers Mike

Yes, the item is really very interesting. I have spent a lot of time researching it, but have not found an answer yet.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know if you find anything about it.

Thanks a lot!

It’s quite chunky so would have been used a lot, what about a candle snuffer? Just a guess.

Maybe. The glass is quite thick and the item fits comfortably in hand.

A phlebotomy cup maybe?

From the outside, this object is indeed very similar, but the hole inside has a straight tubular shape. I don't know how typical this is for a phlebotomy cup.

I missed that :) you can see the internal shape in the last photo, like it would fit on the end of a rod.

He appears to be a preacher, is that a book/bible in his left hand? It's similar to some figures of Martin Luther, or it could be someone like him, so it could fit on the end of a religious staff or rod.

Could be. In his bent left hand, he clutches a large book

Interesting. I have never seen such details of a lamp. It also seems to me that there is some significance to the figure. That is, its presence is directly related to the object

Thank you for that thought. Yeah. The figure is holding a book. I'll have to investigate the issue of the religious staff.
