Title: "GEORGIAN BRISTOL BLUE GLASS RIBBED BULLSEYE HYACINTH VASE"
Post by: ju1i3 on March 22, 2023, 05:38:34 PM
I bought this recently on ebay, it was described as a "GEORGIAN BRISTOL BLUE GLASS RIBBED BULLSEYE HYACINTH VASE". I'm curious what makes it "bullseye" and is that an accurate description? Is "Georgian" an accurate age?

thanks

Certainly an unusual hyacinth vase, the ground pontil base shows a lot of wear and could well be in the ballpark for the Georgian Regency era.
I think it’s pretty good one.

I don’t think that’s a ground pontil mark on the base, it has concentric circle marks and looks more like a moulded finish if it was a moulded blank that was cut, or the tool marks if it was blown from the top without using a pontil rod. It is the area around the concave base that has been cut and polished, a bit like the opposite of a ground polished pontil mark.

It looks more like a 20th century Hoffman/Moser type of thing to me. Also reminded me of this http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,68523.0.html

Nice vase though.

When they say “bullseye”, presumably they were referring to the mark on the bottom being equivalent to the pontil mark on bullseye windowpanes.
