Title: Unusual Bohemian Opaline Vase
Post by: NevB on February 23, 2024, 06:43:29 PM
This is a standard 28cm. opaline vase with a floral decoration but oddly it has the zig-zag, geometric panel up the middle. The decoration on the panel is a mauve base colour which would have been gilded. This type of vase is often attributed to Harrach but I've yet to see one with a Harrach mark, this one has the 11. decorators mark.

An annotation for an enamelled vase, c 1885, in the Harrach book says “…geometrically shaped field filled with motifs from nature or with ornamental decoration reflect a growing interest in Japanese art”.

Thanks Ekimp, that sounds spot on and a bit earlier than I thought. I must look out for the Harrach book

Not a cheap book but I’ve never regretted getting mine :)
