Title: Two More Lighters
Post by: bidda on September 18, 2006, 08:33:06 PM: Hi, this one goes from cobalt to turquoise and has no label.

This one is all-over, kind of mottled copper with a paper label on the bottom.

Any ideas about proper attributions would be greatly appreciated.

Both are very nice examples though.

I know that "made in italy" doesn't reveal anything about the maker or age of a piece but the copper one's shape looked familiar to me so I looked through my books again and I think I found a picture of this exact piece in Leslie Pina's "Fifties Glass" (p.80) attributed to Barbini. I know very little about V.Nason design, though.
The cobalt/turquoise one looks to me to be of the same shape. Do you think it's possible that they were made by the same maker even though the technique is so very different or were lighters/vases of this shape by many companies on Murano?

Day by day I learn a little bit more. It's so much fun to uncover these mysteries and I truly appreciate all the help I get on this board.

They do look very similar and it would be tempting to group them from the same maker, except that glass makers are renowned for copying styles and effects. Are they the same size? Are there any features that look similar/dissimilar, like the bases?

I'm sure an expert will be along in a mo... :lol:

thanks for that link. It had some great information that I'm sure I'll refer to again.
I took a picture of the two lighters side by side to show the similarities and differences. The copper one is approx. 11.75cm tall (it has a white interior) and the blue is slightly shorter at 11.5cm. They both have what appears to be a lighter "ring" around the bases which is more pronounced on the blue one.

I apologize for having to use a flash (it really distorts the color quality) but we've been having a lot of overcast days lately... I'm lucky if I get 10 minutes a day with sufficient daylight for proper picture taking. Both of these pieces are acutally lighter and softer in color than the picture shows.
