Title: Who made this Vase ?
Post by: Smitty on March 12, 2024, 07:02:18 PM
I acquired this glass vase recently described to me as Bohemian. It measures 17.5cms in height and 18cms in width. |It has a satin finish over a pink and white lining. It is decorated with an unusual abstract swirl as seen in the images. With my limited knowledge on glass making techniques, I cannot be sure if its applied or inserted into the main body of glass.  I have made the usual searches and come up with nothing. Has anyone seen anything like it or any ideas. Thank you for your interest.

Can we have larger pictures please, as they don't enlarge enough to see detail. You have 125kb per picture. Bohemian is probably a term better reserved for pre World War I glass, which this is not. It might be Czech; it might be studio glass

Thanks for your comments. My ability to load suitable images is a bit hit and miss.
Lets see if these are any better.

Looks like there is a signature, not on the base but around the edge.

Double checked John but could not see anything. Lots of scratches but no signature. Thanks for your interest.

John I can see what you mean.  I also see what might be a signature.  It's along the side of the vase not on the base and seems to be on the side right above the part where the base has lots of wear.

There is something that looks like a string of capital letters there. ???

It might show up better if some talcum powder were rubbed over it. Or cornflour, cinnamon or cocoa powder.
Any fine powder which will get caught in a groove, be a contrasting colour, and wash off easily.
It definitely looks like a studio piece to me.  :)

It reminded me of something coming from Romania, with the frosted body with an abstract design. I couldn’t find any where they have used murrines though, the abstract designs I was thinking are flat (acid stained?).  There is a vase from Romblast that has vaguely similar design elements…but probably a bit too tenuous. Here is the Romblast vase anyway: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/romblast-romania-mid-century-abstract-cobalt-glass-vase/

You may have hit the right trail, m.   :)
I've googled, and seen several Romblast works with this satinated finish, and some in the same lilac shade, there are loads of pieces with added metallic strapping - but Romblast has been around for some time.
I bought an enormous vase in TKMaxx about 24 years ago, which shows yet another style.
There's a not terribly good pic of my vase here. It's got Beranek tropical flowers in it.

Did the Talcum Powder trick. I can say with confidence that there is no signature anywhere on the piece.
Thanks again for everyone interest.  I'm working on the suggestions and will message any progress.

I quite like some of the Romanian glass with the applied decoration, they seem to have their own unique style. I have a Jon Art satin perfume bottle with non metallic applied decoration. It is very organic…but in an alien sort of way :) The base finish of that is similar to Smitty’s vase.

Well I’m hanging my head with embarrassment!! This morning holding the vase at a certain angle…Low and behold I could see something like a signature. I should never have doubted the experts. Can anyone make something of it . I enclose an image.
In the meantime Im working thro the Romanian thread.

I see Patrick Stern

I'm not entirely sure if that is his signature but that's what it looks like to me.
comparison signature here on this one:

might be the link to the image with the mark. They do look similar to me, but I'm no writing analyst.

Does look likely, the S and t match nicely with this signature:

It can be very hard to spot signatures on anything with a satin finish, throw in white or pale colours to make it even more difficult.

 ;D I found the P and I found the S.
but I didn't think my "analysis" was worth a comment.  :-[

Thanks to everyone who helped me identify my vase. Now I’m trying to find out more about Patrick Stern. On the journey I  did discover Romblast and the world of Romanian glass. There is so much to learn and so little time left.
