Title: Black glass enamelled ginger jar
Post by: Franlow on April 23, 2024, 07:29:19 PM
Hi Guys,
Can anyone identify this for me please. This is the lid of a black matt glass floral enamelled (or painted) ginger jar. I am really hoping top replace this for a really dear friend of mine. It was purchased 35 years ago by her children & she recently broke the base into too many pieces for it to be fixed. She is so upset it was her most treasured possession because of the story. This is the lid. Thanks for any help xx

I think you'll find it very difficult to find a replacement. It's hard to see the detail of the enamelling because you photo is out of focus but it might possibly be Bohemian, you don't say whether it was bought new so it might be anything from late Victorian to mid 20th. century.

This is a better photo. It was purchased new in the 1970's and was expensive at £35 if that helps any?

Are you sure it's glass? There is another lid the same listed on eBay and said to be ceramic.  Looking at your photo my first reaction was it looks like ceramic rather than glass.

It's definitely glass as you can see through it when held to the light.

Black glass is often actually a very dark purple/magenta when viewed against a bright light. There are a couple of jars with similar shaped lids online made by Norleans, Italian glass but in a gloss finish.
