Title: Enamelled vase - Daum? (hopeful rather than thinking that)
Post by: neil53 on July 31, 2024, 09:46:13 AM
Hi, this vase didn''t cost me much but I rated it and then saw something not too dissimilar on Kinghams Auctioneers site at https://www.kinghamsauctioneers.com/auction/lot/lot-402---daum-nancy-an-art-nouveau-enamelled-and-gilt/?lot=25315&so=0&st=daum&sto=0&au=55&ef=&et=&ic=False&sd=1&pp=96&pn=1&g=1 listed as Daum even though it only had a scratched "Nancy" signature on the base.  Here is the description/sizing:

"This is a pretty enamelled and gilded glass vase in the Art Nouveau style.   The vase is in excellent condition.  It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some years of use.  The vase is roughly ovoid in shape and was blown in colourless glass decorated with staining, gilding and enamelled flowers.  It measures 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in width at the undulating everted rim.  It ends in a plain round base.  The bowl is 13 cm (5.2 inches) in height.  There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.  It weighs in at 465 g. (~ 1 lb.)."

All input, as always, appreciated.  Neil

I think it might be modern and hobby painted, as I think I've seen the plain vase several times before. The painting is nicely done but it quite doesn't have that professional appearance to the finish

Agreed.
It's on a very modern shape of base glass too which is the wrong colour (too green) to be anything but fairly new glass.
It is quite nicely done, for hobby glass painting. It normally looks far streakier and blotchier.

Thank you Christine/Sue.  Much appreciated.  I discounted hobby-painting as the raised "D" looked as if it had been fired, but I guess that I was wrong (again!).  Kind regards, Neil

It may have been fired; that doesn't exclude hobbyist work

Glass paints do include tubes of stuff that can be used to pipe lines, often metallicised. :)
