Title: uranium bowl
Post by: Paul S. on August 08, 2024, 03:00:24 PM
Here is the other piece that was a recent charity shop purchase, and again without any marks - I've sent pix of this to Pamela too.      Not a particularly strong glow, and not something I recall from the past.    Maximum rim diameter is c. 33 cms.         Quite possibly I'm missing one or even more parts  -  perhaps originally there might have been a frog and possibly even a base plinth.   Not much more to say, but if you recognize the pattern do please shout, and thanks for looking.

sincere thanks again Mike  -  I'm unsure as to whether I'm missing perhaps a centre figure or not, but it's a great piece, though I've yet to use the u.v. torch in the dark.    some of the folk showing this bowl suggest it does have a centre figure  -  shame I'm missing that part.      Date wise the suggestion is 'art deco', so that puts it c. 1925 - to 1940 perhaps.         Your help much appreciated.

I think this should have a really good glow, 1935 ish and yes I think would have fitted onto a plinth or base plate, and probably had a central flower frog figure. Hopefully someone can fill in the finer details as art deco is not my strong point, Mike

Apparently it's the Paris exhibition of 1925 that was the source of the expression 'art deco' - though I understand that the term, for this art movement, didn't come into general use until much later - some time in the '40s or early '50s.    Apparently anything can be described as 'art deco'  -  it refers to a style of visual art and not simply to material from the '20s and '30s  -  so whether made in 1925 or yesterday would be equally valid.          It's a style that seems timeless and it's popularity never appears to wane  -  preceded of course by art nouveau  -  1935 would be very much in the middle of the original art deco period.
Shame I appear to be missing bits  -  reminds me of my encounters with decanters  -  probably sixty percent of the bottles lack their original stoppers.

This is a good site for float bowls etc. There's a lot to search through. Schweig & Muller are a good possibility but they are a bit of a mystery, quite a few pieces are identified as theirs but I don't think there is any catalogue evidence.
