Title: Chance Giraffe carafe
Post by: Paul S. on August 19, 2024, 01:18:46 PM
one of two pieces from this morning's charity shop walk  -  this is 'iconic', apparently, despite having nothing to do with Russian religious painting;-)  -  but certainly a shape once seen never forgotten.      'Probably'  designed by Robert Goodden in 1955, and discontinued in 1981 -  apparently one of the most distinctive glass shapes of the post war era.

Is that the "swirl" pattern? Did chance brothers put different patterns on these carafe's?

Yes this is Swirl.  8)

The giraffe carafe was made in 4 designs: Swirl, Calypto, Hellenic and Night Sky. I have three of them: Swirl, Calypto and Hellenic - still looking for Night Sky. :)

Incidentally Paul, I saw a carafe in this shape in green glass some years ago but didn't buy it (and kicked myself afterwards!) which was apparently made by one of the Scandinavian glassworks but I can't remember which one.

perhaps seems odd that a Scandi maker should have muscled in on this design ??   Perhaps it was licenced to them from Chance?   -  I probably see one about every four or five years but certainly never seen anything other than clear glass.         Regret for things I've done is eased by the passing of time  -  but it's regret for the things I didn't do that is inconsolable.    I still remember, and wince, for not buying certain things, even many years down the line.  ;D ;D
