Hi folks
Couldn't resist this gorgeous etched twin handled goblet, well made and superbly decorated. Found at local car boot this morning and purchased cheep. Etched one side with a bird of prey and a mountain scene on the other. No great age, I'm thinking 1980s 90s perhaps due to great condition.
It's about 15.5cm tall and just under 10cm across the bowl rim.
Anyone have an idea on the maker, it is unsigned.
Cheers

can't really see clear enough Keith - take it that this is an acid job rather than the wheel? - looks very good. Has the appearance of a loving cup - which is described as a shared drinking container traditionally used at weddings and banquets - but sorry not the faintest idea as to attribution etc. I think this guy does more than cheep ;) ;D

Hi Paul
I think it may be acid or some combination of acid and mechanical means but no it's not wheel engraved. I may have stumbled across the maker but I'm hoping someone else will suggest them. It's gorgeous work and very well made so I'm happy anyway!

Hi, looks to me that it has been engraved with rotary tools in a drill, the engraving looks relatively shallow. Lesley Pyke shows the type of tools and technique https://www.lesleypyke.com/techniques/
It looks quite well done, an independent artist may well have purchased the blank to engrave.

Hi Ekimp
Just taken a look at her site. Incredible work, looks like similar sort of thing. Sadly mines not signed.
Thanks for the insight

Hi
Having searched around I now believe this to be a Cumbria Crystal piece. Have found one or two examples online and the sizes seem a match. Still no idea who the engraver was, would it be in house or purchased blank?
Any help appreciated

Cumbria Crystal blow their own stuff: https://cumbriacrystal.com/. Some but not all their people are given on the website but of course things change over time. It's worth a visit if you are up that way

Hi Lustrousstone
Have taken a look at their site, very expensive quality stuff!
One engraved piece with a different design but same body shape was marked 1980 and the engraver's name. No idea how long they produced this shape so maybe difficult tracking down the engraver.
Thanks for your help

Hi Ekimp, looks like a good possibility. Bird of prey and mountain scenery.
Thanks for the idea.

You could email the company...

Hi Christine
I might try to contact them, but if it does go back to the 1980s it could be a long shot. Still I suppose it can't hurt to try.
Thanks for the suggestion

An alternative place to contact might be the Guild of Glass Engravers?
The theme is one used on a lot of Caithness glass, they did have a lot of very good engravers working for them, although I do not think they were exclusive. The engravers could engrave elsewhere and in their own time, and many did when Caithness was not producing so much. I have visited the Caithness visitor centre in Crieff for years, and have even bought an engraved bit by a former engraver, now working on her own. A little cream jug showing a bumblebee bumping into a dandelion seedhead.

Patrick's pieces are usually signed, even at Cumbria Crystal, but some may have been missed I suppose. It is good enough to be his work though and I have a photo of a piece he did with a different engraving on the same shaped body here https://www.yobunny.org.uk/glassgallery/displayimage.php?pos=-26388.

Thanks everyone, will take some more pics and try sending them to Cumbria and maybe the Engraver's as well.
