Title: identification of cloud glass bowl
Post by: Jypy on June 24, 2025, 10:56:05 AM
Hi,
I have bought a cloud glass bowl in a thrift store. I don't know anything about 'glass', except that I design and make stained glass windows. I was an impulse purchase because I liked the colors, the wavy edges and the beautiful star in the bottom.
An identical item is advertised on the Internet as made by George Davidson, but more likely, it was made by Walther and Sohne?
I need some help with the following question: 1/ Which company made the bowl? 2/ In what year was the bowl made? 3/ What was the name/number of the pattern? 4/ What was the bowl intended for?
The dimensions of the bowl are: width 34cm / depth 23cm / height 5cm
I hope someone on this forum has an identical item and/or has answers to my questions....
Tnx!

‘Herman’ pattern by Walther. A nice find, this pattern is somewhat scarce in my experience.

The pattern is shown here on Chris and Val Stewart’s excellent cloud glass site: http://cloudglass.com/walbowl.htm

Lovely to see the website, thanks for the link, Mosquito.
I see this bowl is described as a bread basket there.
Welcome to the forum, Jypy.  :)

Thanks for the link, Mosquito, and for bringing the pattern 'Herman' to my attention!
There is only a small (or a big) problem: the size of the pattern 'Herman' that is described in the link is 24,5 cm diameter. The 'Herman' I have here has (exact) a width of 34,5 cm and it has not grown over the years.....
Maybe a typo in the first figure or did Walther use more than one mold with different dimensions? Maybe a stupid comment, but I am new here and this kind of 'glass' is not my niche....

Thank you, Chopin-Liszt, for the welcome!

Checking the 1933 Walther catalogue, the bread basket from the Hermann suite (two 'n's, not one as I had previously written), is shown with dimensions of 36.5*24cm. Therefore I'd say yours is a match. The slight disparities between the catalogue dimensions and the measured size are not unusual, especially for patterns with a flanged (flared) rim such as this. I suspect the measurement given on the Cloud Glass site refers to the width rather than the length.

The catalogue is available from Pamela's glas-musterbuch site here: https://www.glas-musterbuch.de/portal/n34
Hermann pattern shown on p.26: https://www.glas-musterbuch.de/portal/p1299
