Post by: TimelessGlass on June 24, 2025, 12:29:40 PM
Hi,

Wd are Ploughing through the paperweights acquisition, and whilst we Have found many similar to this, but we cannot find a cane with "PY". Could this be another design altogether.
All advice appreciated as new to paperweights.

Please add base and profile shots  (always essential for any glass ID) and height and diameter

Hi TimelessGlass

As Christine says,  profile and base pictures will help but this is almost certainly a Harlequin
design from Paul Ysart when he ran the Harland factory - there may be an "H" cane underneath
although I have seen examples without the cane.

This would NOT have been made by Paul himself but by one of his apprentices at Harland either
Willie Manson or David Hurry. Adding the magic name Paul Ysart helped to sell the lesser quality
"H" weights. The weights Paul made had a "PY" cane and were generally exported to America.
Be careful as forgeries exist of "PY" weights. A search on this board will tell you more.

The Harland factory was housed in an old building on a disused RAF station at a hamlet called
Reiss near Wick in Scotland that ran from around 1970 - 1975.

Hope this helps

Derek

Thankyou L.S. & Derek.

As always a fountain of knowledge.
Of course I should have given specifics, safely I am on holiday trying to organise the paperwork and therefore the collection is at home.

Upon my return I will indeed upload the Reverse & Dimensions.

I would like to add we have purchased some books, you have both/ each/all mentioned. We are keen to embrace this new world of weights.

Thankyou, and Derek who are you? If this is not an impertinent question. You intrigue me as much as these designs. 😉
Regards & Sincere Thanks.
