Title: Red cased glass vase, retro - ID = Whitefriars
Post by: Gill on September 23, 2006, 10:20:28 AM
This is the last one this week - honest!  This vase measures 24cms in height, it is quite heavy, the three corners of the triangle curve up from a round base, any ideas, I thought maybe Murano but there,s something about it that says "no" to me.  The clear  glass is particularly clear and bright.  Hope this one's not Chinese! It has some wear to the base.

Hi Gill,

I know very little about Whitefriars, but it looks like a Tricorn vase to me.

I agree with Della - it looks like WF in Ruby Red.  One way to sometimes tell the difference is by weight - the Chinese ones usually being extremely lightweight and WF by contrast being nice and weighty.

Correction please - anything clear cased is heavy regardless of where it has been made.

I assume one of the ID pointers is the way the corners lift away at the base?

I think you've misunderstood me Ivo (more likely I didn't explain my comment well).  I wasn't suggesting that all Chinese cased vases are light - just the ones that these WF tricorn vases get confused with. These particular ones are usually light as a feather and very cheap feeling and easily differentiated.  Other shapes and styles however I was excluding from my comment.

Thanks loads again y'all, oddly enough I spend quite a bit of time rooting around for WF and it didn't even cross my mind!
