I found a 5.1/2" square plate today in original box with a transfer of a beefeater. Oval gold foil label reads "Chance Glass a member of the Pilkington Group - made in England"
The box says there are 6 different models in the "Sights of London" series -
Coldstream Guard
Chelsea Pensioner
Royal Horse Guard ( The Blues)
Beefeater
London Policeman
London Bus.
In style I'd say sixties.
Rare? Search did not reveal anything.
-
Thanks, there are in fact 10 'Sights of London', although produced in two sets (4 and 6). Date about 1970, I believe, but I'm still following this up.
Union Flag
Businessman
Scottish Piper
Underground
Horse Guard
Coldstream Guard
Chelsea Pensioner
Policeman
Bus
Beefeater
There is mention on my site, but it is squirreled away a little:
Fiestaware > Patterns > Seriesware
-
Presumably 6 at the time Ivo's box was made, so date the addition of the other 4 and you get a good date range for set 1.
-
The oval label actually dates this particular dish post-1970. The style of decoration does look like the Swinging Sixties, but I think Chance were behind the times

sorry for poor picture quality, camera is unavailable so used phone instead.
-
Thanks for the photo. Just to confirm: the set of six was first announced in 1972.
-
I like these A LOT - I've seen the Beefeater and the London Bus both for sale on eBay but, for one reason or another, I didn't manage to get them. I'd love a whole set - I might make it my mission to see if I can get them all. If you're going to sell this ever Ivo do please let me know :-)
-
I'll let you know when I see them Pip. You can be the curator for this section of the Chance museum :D
The London bus is quite humorous - seem to remember it's crammed with police and Guardsman.

Excellent! Yes please do let me know - I'm up for the challenge :-)
-
Update: with regard to the Seriesware London scenes - I've got the Beefeater and the Policeman :-) .... so if anyone spots any of the others for sale I'd be grateful if you'd give me the nod (assuming you don't want them yourself of course).

Ah. I have two buses. Perhaps we can come to an arrangement, think they only cost about a fiver each.
btw I was trying to get a set going too (forgot I already had the bus!)...we'll have to watch out for each other bidding!

Gosh were you? I didn't realise Max - well we can watch out for each other and make sure we let each other know what the other is doing - I don't mind how long it takes me to get my set together. What other ones have you got already BTW?
Oh and yes please - I'd love to buy one of your buses off you - let me know how much you want for it :-)

I now have a boxed (somewhat tatty) and labelled union flag see here (http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b217/lustrousstone/th_IMG_0939.jpg) (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b217/lustrousstone/IMG_0939.jpg)

As the jack is incorrectly drawn, perhaps it is not really a Chance piece? If it is how embarrasing that they didn't know the rules for drawing the jack!
-
Excellent, thanks Christine. Thought I'd be struggling to get examples, but have a few now :)

Ah, I was going to question that - wasn't sure without checking. However, it could simply be that they've stuck the label on the wrong side
-
Correction: just checked and it is right - the shape isn't, of course, but difficult to portray on a square dish
-
The diagonal crosses must not have a right angle in the centre. If adapting the shape is allowed, that is still not and is considered an important point.
-
O'er missis, we can't write and complain. I only took the photo guv (Well actually OH did, mine had too many reflections) There's a nugget for the book then
-
I was wondering why it wasn't correct too...

Erm, it is a cartoon and drawn with no pretensions to accuracy. I don't think we are supposed to query it literally - after all, do we then query all of Giles drawings (he did draw the union FLAG enough times...)

Judging by the accuracy of the bus, I suppose we can cut them some slack on the Jack.
-
Yup, never seen a Beefeater drive a London bus with loads of police as passengers...

Isn't it only a Jack if it is on a ship?
-
Isn't it only a Jack if it is on a ship?
That's correct. Unless know otherwise it should be called the Union Flag.
-
It is the Union Jack through common parlance for nearly 100 years, of course if you are older than that...
Ah! but the bus is cariacture and the flag cannot be given that designation! So grump.
-
hee hee we are all such ANORAKS!!!!

-
Now stop twittering, you Chancy Chappies, and find more plates for Pip...

Edited to shorten link

Now this is an interesting one, but may not be Chance. At least, I'm pretty sure it's not a Chance design and the size isn't quite right: I've noted a 3" and 4½" square dish, but not 3½".
Of course, if Chance didn't make it, who did? It may be a later Fiesta dish during the 1980s and the style seems to suggest this era.
-
I still owed you a better picture for the Chance Beefeater:

Thanks Ivo, that's perfect 8)

Thanks Hil, I've corrected the link length.
THis one is almost certainly by Houze of the USA, but it goes to show that Chance didn't corner the market when it came to quintessential British sights! As a tourist item, I wonder if any of these dishes were sold in the UK? Otherwise, why did Houze make them in the first place?
-
 I now have an image of American tourists taking home London souvenirs that were made in the US :P
