Title: RFI: Virginia Bliss Engraver?
Post by: manonkavesky on October 12, 2006, 10:51:43 PM
Hello, Does anyone have any information on the glass engraver Virginia Bliss?
I believe she is English.
I purchased a crystal drinking glass,  a commemorative piece, made for the Glyndebourne Opera
It depicts Carmen
Please don't be alarmed by the price, i had to fill the field in with some number!

Manon, the only thing I can find about her is a mention that she was a student of the late Peter Dreiser (http://bender-graves.ca/giin/C1631767577/E20060427214930/index.html), master glass engraver, presumably at Morley College (London) where he was a tutor for 25 years.

It's in the Peter Dreiser obituary - see link (the bit in blue text) in my post above.

Hi, with obituaries in mind,
does anyone know whether it is possible to access The Times obits on-line?
Can't explain other than hunch, but the obit for Douglas Percy Bliss, Times, 20th March 1984, or that of Phyllis Dodd, sometime in 1995, may reveal some clues.

Marcus

Just sent it to you, Marcus.

Is Douglas Percy Bliss any relation to the composer, Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975)?

Thanks, David,
As I thought I remembered, Bliss had two daughters, and I'm just wondering if this Virginia Bliss is one of them.
I'm not aware of any connection to Sir Arthur Bliss, and none mentioned in DP Bliss's entry in the Dictionary of British Artists Since 1945.
DP Bliss was an engraver of some significance, and director of the Glasgow School of Art for almost twenty years.
Regards,
Marcus

Glyndebourne's archive service are hoping to come back with further information on Virginia Bliss within the next week or so.

I study jewellery making at Morley College - it's a great place, one of the oldest adult education colleges in the country, and has had some illustrious people on its staff over the years.

I hadn't realised they taught glass engraving, but according to their website the course is still running. If I ever get bored with filing and soldering...

Two and a bit years on whilst looking for something else I found a mention of a Virginia Bliss who could be the person Manon is seeking. She is listed in yell.com as a glass decorator, and living in London SW15.  Contact details sent direct to Manon by email.
