Title: Is this a butter dish?

This seems rather large for a butter dish - can anyone enlighten me please?

It measures approx. 5 x 3  and is nearly 3.5 inches deep.

Hi,

I don't know who made your dish, but butter use to come in a one pound block before they split it up into 4 sticks, so your dish and the look of it's age seem to fit. --- Mike

Edited to add; This completed ebay auction was for a 1 pound butter dish and the sizes given are very close to yours.

Thank you for that information Butchiedog. That would make the size viable for a butter dish. Second question is; would a butter dish have been made like a glass box as this one is rather than the other way up with the flat bit at the bottom and the lid being the 'dome' over the top?

Here in the UK, we used to have glass butter boxes just like yours when I was a child during the 50s and 60s.  I would expect they were imported from the US like a lot of post-war utility glass.

I remember when I first saw a flat based butter dish with a cover, I thought it was a cheese dish.

The half-pound Pyrex ones were boxes with lids, but no knobs

Thank you Lynne and Christine - it all makes sense now. I remember the pyrex ones from the 60's come to think of it. Now I need to find the maker. It has a very deco look to it and somehow I feel it is probably 30's or 40's.
