Title: Are these vases Bohemian spatter glass?
Post by: johnfandmaryp on December 04, 2006, 05:23:57 PM
From my research, I think these may be Bohemian "spatter glass", but would be very grateful for confirmation (or otherwise!). The tall slim one has little 'spines' on it like a cactus!
Many thanks in anticipation, John.

Definitely "Spatter glass" but I'm not too sure about the "Bohemian" attribution...they could be from pretty well anywhere...

They're cased, which seems a bit unusual :?

Thanks both. I based the Bohemian bit on a very similar vase on eBay ~ item number 120052879460 ~ but I don't know how accurate the description is.
I have managed to find several cased spatter glass pieces on a search of the web, but they don't appear to be all that common. Also found a 'thorn' vase on a dealer's site, described as Czech, but the thorns are the only similarity!
Cheers, John.

Hi,

There are a good deal of Chinese import glass items out there these days, made that same way. Many are listed on ebay as Murano, Czech, Bohemian and everything else they are not. --- Mike

Hi,
these look like Czech, around 1920s-30s era. Typical colour scheme for this period,& yes, the use of cased glass was a feature of these items.
Have a look at the base for signs of wear appropriate to items of this age. Some are occasionally marked on the base "Czechoslovakia".
The tall vase has rustic-style thorns which are a throwback to Victorian glass, but the colour scheme is pure 1920s-30s.
The bulbous vase would have had a metal flower arranger on top.
Similar items are pictured in the book "Made in Czechoslovakia" by Ruth Forsythe. Also see Truitt's "Bohemian Glass II".
Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the information Marinka ~ very helpful. They do have base ware commesurate with the era you suggest so, given this and where I got them from, I'm pretty confident that they are 'real' rather than Chinese exports. Haven't found any 'Czechoslvakia' marks yet, but will have another good look!
Thanks again, John.
