Title: information on Lazlo please
Post by: Quackers on December 18, 2006, 11:01:02 PM
Hi there, I have a couple of Lazlo vases bought at a local auction, and after about 6 months I still know next to nothing about them ::)

Can anyone tell me more?  I'll try and get photos on sometime.

cheers

Tim, is this the sort of thing you mean?   http://lazloglass.co.uk/index.html

Yes that is the sort of thing, unfortunately there is no information that I can find on that site other than sizes and prices.  I have emailed them in the past to enquire but never had a reply.

I will take photos of mine today, one is of the same sort of irridescent finish as the vases on that website, the other is pale green with gold foil inclusions.

thanks again

Okay here are the photos;

Perhaps I wasn't clear before - what I would like to know is WHO is Lazlo, WHERE is it made, WHEN it is made?  The website only give sizes and prices - no background at all  that I can find.  I assume it is French by the stickers but I struggle to translate that (German, Dutch i'm fine - but French ???).  I have Ivo's book but can find none of the terms or Lazlo in it and google has been no use so far.

Does anyone else have any?

 :)

As far as I know, Lazlo trained with John Ditchfield. He does big butterflies and dragonflies and snails etc. on his glass in glass, unlike John Ditchfield, who uses little silver thingies on his work.

Somebody needs to suggest to the site that they should make it clear if they are resellers of imported Chinese glass or an Art Glass studio based in France, or...

Hi Sue, thanks for that idea, I'm not surprised as the irridescent vase is very similar to my J Ditchfield vases (but a lot heavier  ;D ).  I still find it strange that nobody seems to know much about Lazlo, it pops up on ebay occasionally but that is all I had seen until these two popped up with 4 Ditchfields at my local auctionhouse.

Frank - I couldn't agree more, would you want to buy a £100 vase from a website like that???  Unfortunately, as I said, they didn't reply to my email...

I sent them a mail puzzling who they are ;D

My doubts centre over the label,
If that is for the French market "Maitre Verre" has no meaning here... Maitre verrier, meaning master glass maker, might, but being honest, even that label could be so mis-leading, few serious buyers in France would bother.
The web-site is less than informative, so could this stuff be made in China, and re-labelled?
I do not need it signed, merely better info, which, on the site suggested, is non-existent ::).
regards,
Marcus

Re. garding your enquiry about where Lazlo glass is made?

It is made in Lancashire by Lazlo himself and no other blowers every piece is unique and pure quality.

He has retired from producing for now through ill health ,hopefully he will make a comeback as soon as he is able.

Thank you for your enquiry. If I can help with anything else just contact me.

Frank, thanks for that, at least you got a reply from someone.  It looks like they don't want to say too much about themselves.

It is interesting - why the "French" label if it is made in the UK ???  Oh well, I shall just enjoy them as they stand.

Argghh I've just realised I knew more about this but have forgotten. Lazlo is based in Blackpool I think?  I remember someone telling me about him way back - but I can't recall the details.  :-\
