Title: Scandi or Bohemian Bowl, pressed? moulded or hand made?? a Conundrum?
Post by: Andy on December 28, 2006, 03:53:33 PM
Hi,
its a bit quiet on here at the moment, so ive dug out another of my confusing items,
to keep you all busy and minds working in the holidays!
This bowl , ive had for some time, bought off ebay a couple of years ago because i liked it!
I cant make up my mind whether its really good by a master or mass produced, but ive not seen
one like it before.( it may be hand engraved or carved, maybe like pate de verre?? or just pressed??)
The back of the bowl may help someone identify it, its like little glass balls.
The pattern is embossed (stands proud) i think its then been washed over with maybe some
kind of enamel to give the animals a really lifelike feel. I think the photos are quite good
and may help.
Any ideas of origin, maker, tecnique, anything would be helpful
Thinking caps on!

and the last one, rear or base of bowl,

Is it Hot or is it not??

Andy, it is hard to believe that YOUR 3/11 shows the bowl in question  ??? for further help please can you take a picture from the sides as it stands in front of you?

Hi Pamela,
your wish is granted, theres a few new ones on there now, best ones are

As i say, i havent seen anything like it before, the base looks like it must be moulded
but it looks too good and polished.
Also i believe the whole dish is made from clear glass, then the inside of bowl is coated
white, so it shows through the base, and then another coat of enamel? or green colouring
has been overlaid on the white, and like washed to give the emboosed pattern more depth!
If that makes sense!
Actually this next photo, is out of focus, no flash held up to a light, and you can see where its
a bit scratched inside the bowl, the light shows through!

Confusing one , isnt it!

It feels Scandinavian to me. But if the colouring can scratch it is unlikely to be enamel, and thus paint! I would expect it to ne be moulded... how else  :) but certainly fascinating. So we have a complex moulded design with a cost saving finish that gives it a superficial ceramic look. 1970's perhaps... the age of sham illusion? Or too much whisky?

Hi Frank,
the scratches are more like chips on a few of the high points, each one no bigger than
a pin prick, the photo didnt really work! makes them look too big. Its a very solid
highly polished finish, if its paint, its an unusual coating. It appears to me that its been
'fired' like a glaze!
My first thought was Scandinavian, but im leaning towards Bohemian, i think the style
and type of the animals is probably a give away, sadly, not to me!
I have a feeling this one may remain a mystery!  :'(

Congrats to the glass message board for identifying the lovely glass ashtray by Viking,

thought id bump this one up again, Im sure its a quality piece, but cannot work out how
its made, or where its from, i asked a Swedish friend of mine about the pattern, she thought
more Bohemian than Scandinavia.
Anyone recognise the pattern? Im sure its quite distinctive and looks familiar somehow.
Maybe its an Egyptian pattern??
Any views welcome.
Cheers Andy

A bump up from 5 years ago, with new photos.
I still havent seen anything quite like it, a bit more experienced now, and i dont think its anything very special.
I presume its been pressed in an intricate mould, then possibly a thin layer of white glass, and then the top green layer,
although maybe it has been engraved by hand then coated. I still cant work it out! Ive never seen a base like it either.
I hope some better photos may help, and lots of new members, maybe someone will have seen something similar?
 :help:

But 5 years is not so long  :24: and it is still an amazing piece. Sure someone will get it one day. Have you tried the US forum http://chataboutdg.com/forums/ might be worth bouncing it off them... you never know.

Here's left field thought....what about a South African studio?

Too Marxist Max  - it took quite a mould maker to do that and what I have learned since the original posting was that US mould (mold) makers were about the best. Waaayy beyond a studio worker in my humblest opinion. Plus the silence over such a distinctive design suggests a lot of water...

Andy,
For my two cents worth I might look toward the middle East.
As the bowl looks very similar to some pieces a friend of mine bought home from Iran and the beast depicted is what she refers to as a Jayran.
Cheers
