Title: another snake vase?
Post by: josordoni on January 18, 2007, 05:48:01 PM
Following on from John's thread about his ice tazza with a snake, I have been meaning to put this vase up for ages in case someone can give me an idea of where it might be from.

It is 5.5 ins 140 mm tall, rubbed gilt to the rim, polished pontil (Whitefriars style) with a double twist green snake.

It's sort of nice in a reptilian way...

Lynne, please forgive me if I under-estimate it - to me it looks like a very early 'promotion' glass for an unspecified article... mustard? The base looks ground

Hi Pamela, I think it would be too big for mustard, it is 140 mm tall, and 100 mm diameter across the rim, would hold about a half litre I would say!

The base isn't ground, except for the central pontil.  There is quite a lot of wear to the outer edge, so yes, it may be early.
