Title: Floor decanter
Post by: Glasetcetera on January 22, 2007, 05:37:21 PM
Any idea where this floor decanter comes from? Blenko, Scandinavian?

Thanks for your help,

"Genie bottle" 1960/70s Empoli. If you google them also try Jenny and Janie, they're often grossly misspelt especially in the in the US.

Ivo, thank you. So you think it's Italian. I have found a (almost) similar one at eBay but also without any information about the origin.

They are not rare at all. The other day there was a film production company looking to buy 100 of these. Don't know if they managed that many - but I would not be surprised if they did.

They're not floor decanters, they're top-of-the-kitchen-cupboards-decanters!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b227/chopin-liszt/kitchenbottles1.jpg

They're cheap and cheerful, I like them.

I can't see what pattern is on your bottle - does the pattern of the stopper match the pattern of the base? I think some patterns are harder to find than others. Also, some are much nicer than others, and some colours are harder to find than others.

There's a picture of one in Andy McConnell's book! They must be on thier way up....

Wicked Sue!!! ;D I love these too - I've got a couple which I'll probably bung in my shop because they're funky and affordable.  I have a particularly nice blue cased one though - also Italian I think but probably confused for Holmegaard.

I don't really know what they are. Mostly Italian. I got them for decorative value only. Stuff gets manky in the kitchen.

Notice the "poisson volante", stuck in one that doesn't have a propper stopper.
As I said, cheap and cheerful. I won't pay more than £5 for one, and if I pay that much, it needs to be unusual! (but that's just me >:D)

Hi Sue, It's not pink, it's amethyst. There is one burst bubble inside :-[

Is it of any value or interest? (or would it be if it were perfect?)
I paid £5, a long time ago, didn't know what it was, decorative value only.

Christine - ;) I take it that's the right sort of fish?

But you think it's WF? I sort of did, but I got it when I was id'ing WF by the big, round, polished pontil-mark...... :D ::)

I've certainly never seen another one.

I've got a much, much nicer amethyst bubbly bowl/vase, cased, perfect. I think it's Webb Corbett, though. Sorry, camerally challenged.

Sorry about the lack of geiger interest Lynne, but as you can see, I have a good use for it. You can tell the sex of the fish??????????? :o

:o :o :o YOU CAN TELL THE SEX OF THE FISH!! blimey some vet's can't even do that with live fish, the glass maker must have been having fun when they made it  ;)

I dont know if it's WF, but it looks quite nice, i wouldn't mind it on my windowsill  :)( err the amathyst vase i mean :-[)

I thought it was you could sex a fish - you referred to it as "he"!
(Besides, I thought they had cloacae, which look the same in both)

Modified:-sorry, me that's confused, Lynne can sex fish, not you, Sue!

;D Anyway, back on subject, Sue! I've had a look in the Lesley Jackson WF book, and I can't find that vase. It might not be WF.

Dimensions are:- 9.25" tall, 7.75" wide at the rim, 4.5" wide at the base. It is cased, the glass is fairly thin, considering it's bubbly, about 6mm. Being camerally challenged, I can't get more pics, sorry.

It's not a practical beast. The burst bubble is there, I imagine, because the glass is so thin and somebody has stupidly actually USED it.
It is the sort of thing I'd use as a small wastepaper bin, if it weren't for the thinness. It's pretty big.

Sue that is a fabulous display!  I always thought they were "what can I do with that awkward window sill at the top of the stairs vases", but I stand corrected!!!!!!

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/albums/userpics/10086/smallerDSCN0663.jpg

Sorry the window looks so grubby - it's actually salt as this window faces the sea.  I've only found 3 of these in 3 years...............guess they're not quite so common down here.

Have a great weekend all

Hello cat, you've got nice ones!

I don't think your purple and red ones are the Empoli make, but the green one, I think is - it's certainly the most common maker, but the pattern is not the most common, and you have the correct stopper!
I've got examples of the same 3 you have, the purple one is a BEEZER, isn't it! I've only seen yours, mine and one other - the "one other" had a big price tag on it - £70! (I paid £7 - a lot for me >:D)

Hi all,

The picture of Sue's kitchen is distorted for me and looks slightly diagramatic :( Looks great though - very imposing ;)

Never-the-less the amethyst vase in question appears to be from a bubbly range that I have always known as by Royal Brierley. There is a cross-over in the shapes used for the Rainbow Ware range by them, if you are looking for others in the series.

If Sue's purple one is the same as mine, it's not bubbly, Nigel. It has a texture on the surface of a sort of diamond shapes grid. The red one is bubbly, if it's the same as mine.

Tiger, your Webb bucket vase is quite unlike my amethyst one. Mine has very controlled bubbles, small at the bottom, bigger and longer at the top, but very regylar. Your vase has round irregular bubbles. They're the same shape, though!

Many years ago I had a unit in one of those collectable shops. I could knock out those genie bottles for £12 all day every day.

You must live in a much wealthier part of the uk than me!
I have always liked them.

I really want to put those fabby huge chemist's bottles in the kitchen, the kind with the strange luminous dichroic liquids in them, but they're just a tad on the expensive side.

I'm sorry about the quality of the picture, Nigel.
It's not distorted though, that's exactly how the camera took it. Probably not in focus, quite possibly a freebie camera from D.  >:D It's an ancient pic.
I'm not au fait with jiggerypokery to make it look how the camera didn't.
