Title: Three unusual pieces - Polish - Paul Manners & lagre Slumped piece
Post by: pyrology on January 22, 2007, 09:48:41 PM
It's been awhile since I have visited this board and I am hoping that I can get some help with these three pieces of glass.

The first one is a lovely Victorian Tankard, most likely of Polish Origin that reads : DEPARTMENT OF MINING GEODESY with the initials AGH which I think are from the University in Krakow.
I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to the maker?

And the bottom

Next is a piece that although is unsigned with a name, I am told that this is the signature of Paul Manners. I have only been able to find one other similar piece and I know that at least one of these vases were offered on eBay.  I am having problems descibing this piece and information on Paul Manners is sketchy at best. Does anyone know of any on'line resourse to get additional information? This is one of his earlier works, before he started doing his angular designs - I think the date is 1977.

And this third and final piece is huge! Like a console bowl and very thick. I don't even know where to begin with this one and no one I know, has any information they can share with it's possible origins. Have any of you seen anything like it?

Thank you in advance for any help with these that you can offer.

I guess I didn't do so well with posting these photos. I have opened a Gallery page up, but only have the Paul Manners piece uploaded, still trying to find the photos on my hard drive of the others.

Karen, the third piece is Blenko #633 bowl and dates to 1966. Terry

Hi,

The Polish piece is of relatively late manufacture, ie after WWII. Akademii Gorniczo-Hutnicza, is a stand-alone higher eductional institution (established 1912) and is separate from the Jagellonian University of Krakow. The Geology Faculty, of which the Mining Geodesy Department is a section, it would appear, only came into existence in 1951.

Identifying a maker means you are looking at probably.... Krosno, but there are several other Polish glass-works who could have made this item.

 ???
Thank you everyone. I am a bit more confused though about the rubena tankard. Are you basing the date on the information about the University, or from the aspects of the glass and it's construction?
The style of the script on the tankard, suggests to me that it may be much older than post WWII, however, I am no expert, and that is why I came here. The color varies from deep dark red to almost clear with a pink tint.  (Am I wrong in calling it rubena?) The writing is in silver that is applied to the glass and not etched into the glass. It measures 9 1/2 inches tall and flares out at the bottom. No Pontil scar. The glass is thick and looks like quality to me.
Not trying to question what you have said, just wanting to understand the glass better.

Hi,
The tankard, whilst a traditional style, is probably of no great age.
The script is current Polish, which has not changed much since the beginning of the twentieth century, and does not show significant variation from current Polish script styles. However the content of the inscription, regarding the Mining Geodesy department, of AG-H, would appear to date the inscription to post-1951.
Like its immediate neighbour Czechoslovakia, Polish glass-works continue to make glass in a historical manner, and glass in traditional patterns, has been produced within the Silesian/Bohemian region for many years.
I think it unlikely, though it may be possible, that someone added the inscription to an item of a much earlier production period.

:)Thank you Dexter for the info on Paul Manners I will check it out first thing in the morning.

Le Casson  - I wish to express my gratitude for your thoughtful posts. Someone one the E PGP Boards thought it might be worth while to contact the school about the tankard, I have no idea who to direct such an inquiry to - so I think I willl forgo it and just go ahead and list it.

I also spoke to Tammy of the Blenko 4 and she has told me that the console bowl is a #633  and a Wayne Husted design made in 1963 (not 1966) but Thank you Terry for pointing me in the correct direction.

Thanks everyone for your posts, your lesson will not be lost on me.

Just for accuracy sake on the Blenko #633 bowl. It is pictured in amber in the 1966 catalog and that is where I got my date. As crazy as it may seem, I actually own two of these. One is blue and the other is green and let me tell you, finding a spot for them can be a challenge. They are approximately 14 inches long, 7 inches wide and weigh about 5 1/2 pounds. Truly a huge hunk of glass. Terry

I have checked another Polish document, which confirms that the use of the inscription cannot date to before 1951, as the department was created during the re-structuring of the School of Surveying and the School of Mining Sciences.

For flashed / engraved glass from Poland, IRENA is the usual suspect.
