I have this platter (actually, I have two & a matching small 3 footed bowl).

In my searches I came across this Vase on Pamela Wessendorf's webpage, which appears to be of a similar pattern. http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/vasen/02640.html.
Is it likely that my platter could be from this manufacturer? Or am I leading myself down the garden path? I would love your opinion.
Cheers,
Lyn

Hi Lyn,
We've discussed this pattern before, with the best guess being that they're probably of Czech origin. There seem to have been a few makers of similar patterns, because there are distinct differences. Pieces of a similar pattern turn up on Australian eBay quite often as well.

I think this piece is actually Polish - by Stolle Niemen (circa 1926-35).
-
Hmm .. thanks for those links Cathy. Doesn't look promising, eh?
Glen, all I can google on Stolle Niemen is reference to a J. Stolle Glass Factory in Niemen which produced Glass Insulators (which it appears are collectible - go figure!). Do you mind if I ask what makes you think this piece is by Stolle Niemen? And where would I be most likely to find some information on this Glass Manufacturer? I'm still new to all this researching, you see ;) Thanks for all your help!
Cheers,
Lyn

Lyn - Stolle Niemen is not yet well researched, as far as I am aware. I am currently just scratching the surface of Polish produced glass (eg http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/HORTENSJA.html ).
I guess you are most likely to find information on this from me. You see I have in my hand a catalogue page from Stolle Niemen which shows your piece exactly. It has the number 1782. When I get the chance I will scan the item (and I'll also do the Ballerina piece that Cathy has, that I mentioned was by SN in a previous, recent thread). It's all just a matter of time really - as I am working on a couple of other glass research projects at the moment too.
-
Wow Glen, that was quite fascinating! Thanks so much :D I wait in eager anticipation ;)
-
Ah, wondered what that hint in the other link was about, Glen ;) Great stuff!
-
Here's the piece from this thread. I'll post the ballerina in the relevant thread.

Wow! Thanks Glen. I noticed that these seem to have 4 'handles' so to speak, where mine only has two. Do you think that I can safely assume my platter would be of the same manufacturer? The bottom view looks almost identical except for those handles. I have a bid on a bowl, so hopefully that comes through. There seem to be quite a few of these around.
Cheers,
Lyn

Could be just a quirk of the catalogue drawing, Lyn, rather than an actual photo. But then, maybe another maker somewhere made it too.......
-
He he .. and so it continues, eh? :D Do you mind if I ask how you come across these catalogues?
-
All explained in the "Hortensja" article......a collector friend who was working in Poland came across them.
-
Lyn, thank you for bringing this up! I had replaced the plate and posy troughs on my site from VSL back to 'unknown' many months ago, but I forgot the vase - sorry ::)
-
:D No worries, Pamela. Glad I could be of assistance ;D Thanks Glen for all your help on this. Will you post your findings on your webpage?
-
Hi Glen,
There's a pink bowl in the same pattern on p. 18 of Andy McConnell's 20th Century Glass, with the press-moulded mark "Czechoslovakia". ??? Presume more than one company made the pattern - wish they hadn't made life so darn complicated...
PS re the ballerina bowl, should we split it out as a topic now?
-
wish they hadn't made life so darn complicated...
:) Cathy - they did it to make our life verrry tricky (a perfect example being those darned Pinwheel vases :P)
And I guess, yes. Let's make the ballerina do the splits :o
:D

I saw a few of these marked Czechoslovakia at the first Northern Glass Fair in Harrogate - there are two pics of them in GlassGallery here: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=36

Thanks Anne, yes I did see these. I think someone else might have posted this link. I don't know, mine just doesn't look as impressive as theirs :'( But then maybe it's just the display. I guess I should just be satisfied with Czech for the time being. Maybe Glen will stumble across some more info. Thanks everyone for your help.

Here are some similar ones, I think the final verdict was czech on these although none were marked.thought you might be interested in seeing them. Polish link is interesting though.

Oops, messed up again, someone's already put these on :-[ One day I'll have a useful response I'm sure!

Gill, no worries, I'm sure it's better to have the info twice than not at all. ;)
