Probably a silly question considering the level of discussion on this board but.........
Who made thistle vases? And the Celtic jugs that look the same?

Hi Dee, and welcome to the board!
I can't help, but the pressed glass people usually log on by the late afternoon our time, and it might help if you can provide them with a bit more information. There were probably more than one maker of thistle vases, and so you'll have to be more specific.

Bagley made a a Celtic cream jug in two sizes 2.5 and 4 in. The pattern has interlocking diamonds on the round part and ribs on the top part. I have also seen the small one as a posy.

Edinburgh Crystal made a whole range of drinking glasses in the Thistle pattern - have a look here (http://www.discontinueddesigns.co.uk/category.aspx?catid=169&start=0) - quite expensive on the secondary market.
The Old Fashioned shape looks very like a vase.

Tudor, England made wineglasses engraved with thistles, I have a set from the '50's.
Vasart made coloured thistle-shaped things, as did Strathearn, and I think , Monart - have a peek at Frank's site!

Monart did some thistle based designs.
Edinburgh Crystal did everything, Decanters, Glasses, Jugs, Vases and tumblers in thistle shapes. There is also a mass of other pressed glass in the shape of a thistle which is a Scottish emblem. No doubt there are collectors who collect just for the shape.
We talk about any glass from fibre-glass tthrogh glass bricks and jam jars to finely carved glass sculpture - nothing in glass is sacred (Excepting religious glassware of course).

Now I don't know if this is going to work but here is a pic of what I mean by thistle vases.
The jugs look just like them but with a handle. Lustrousstone, thank you for the Bagley information I will go and have a look.

Those don't look like Bagely to me - the colours look wrong for a start. Bagley blue is quite pale and the Bagley ribs are not arranged in fans. However, yours do look very like the ones in the auction link Cathy gave. Where are you? If you're in Australia, maybe they're native.

And then there is etched glass. My "wedding" crystal was "Bohemian" with thistles and vines etched around (I liked them as I felt the etching was more delicate that cut crystal). To my surprise, when looking in my mother's china cabinet I found three "parfait" glasses of my grandfather's that had the same design etched on them. :o

Thanks to your suggestion I found out that the jugs are Bagley. I don't have a photo of mine so couldn't put one up. After reading your suggestion I found them on this site.

The vases pictured are the other enquiry in my thread. The amberina one at the back came from America, the yellow one at the front is a Tiawanese (sp?) copy and the rest were bought here in Australia. I don't know if Crown made thistles, I haven't seen them on the website or in the books I have on Aussie glass.

Aah, there's a flaw with the profiles. You have to go to forum profile information and put it in personal text as well. Glad you found your jugs. Close ups of the vases would be useful, it's hard to see any detail.
