Title: Sherdley pattern - does anyone recognise please?
Post by: Anne on February 04, 2007, 01:26:26 PM
Completed auction http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180077982667 states that one of the dishes has a Sherdley label, but other than the general shape of the dishes I cannot make out what pattern this might be. I've asked the seller if he can provide better pics (without that awful background) but he has not done so. Does anyone (can anyone?!) recognise these bowls from the poor photo provided please? I'm wondering if these are the same pattern as the mystery pieces that we discussed some while ago here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3595.msg27924.html#msg27924

If this pattern is indeed Sherdley it explains why none of the US glass collectors recognise it!  ::)  ;D

Looks like a vague octagonal shape, but the example you show in the other thread, doesn't look like a pattern I recognise - give me a minute...

Sorry Anne: thought I might have an old advert that would help, but sadly nothing came up.

Thanks David, that's what I thought, and my dish is an elongated octagonal shape also... anyone else seen these perhaps?

Doesn't mean to say it isn't Sherdley though... I haven't got all of their adverts and the labelled one listed on eBay does have many similarities. Pity they can't forward a decent photo.

Sorry, Anne - have looked through my pics and ads and can't see anything octagonal. Someone (is that t'other Anne?) has just listed a rather wonderful hexagonal kingfisher dish on e-bay - 220078892728 - but it's quite different in style. Wonder if these ones have a registration number "incribed" on the base?

Hi Heidi,  thanks for this, yes it's t'other Anne listing that one. I've seen them in amber and once in a clear glass, but they are totally different to this eBay set. I wish he'd do better pics for me...  :-\

I think this small creamer is the same pattern.

There's a bowl in this pattern pictured in the Design Council Archives, which was exhibited in the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946:

Britain Can Make It (http://vads.ahds.ac.uk/large.php?pic=DCA1271&cmd=search&page=1&mode=boolean&words=britain+can+make+it+glass+bowl&idSearch=boolean&vadscoll=Design+Council+Archive,+University+of+Brighton)

No manufacturer given, but most of the pressed glass in the exhibition seems to have been by Sherdley. Alexander Hardie Williamson started designing for them a few years before, so he's a possible for the designer - though this is much more ornate than the other stuff he designed around this time.

I'm now the proud owner of a brown hexagonal kingfisher bowl. But am still on the look-out for a clear one, if anyone happens to spot one.

(could a mod shorten this link? thanks! Mod: As requested)

If they with their resources cannot ID the designer...

I confess, I've never tried e-mailing them, just used the digital archive. But I recognise most of the other BCMI pressed glass from Sherdley ads and glass reference books.

I have dealt with Dr. Lesley Whitworth, the assistant curator, and found her most helpful and accommodating, so I'm sure she would welcome anyone's input on possible attribution. I'll pass you her e-mail.

Thanks Heidi, yes, I think this is the same as the creamer, and very like my bowl too, although the bottom on mine is slightly different.
