I was fortunate enough to get a mixed lot of glass at auction yesterday - and spent most of last night and some of today trying to identify the 9 bits that came with the Whitefriars optic rib (9587) vase that I bought it for ::)
An Aseda ruby bubble JIP vase (stickered "Swedish Art Glass") was easy. And I have discarded a heavily damaged red lobed, cased, vase which you often see in junk shops at 50p - or less...
But these have me stuck at the moment, can anyone help me in the right direction to ID them please?
This one looks like some of the small bowls on Le Casson's useful Sklo Union site but I'm not convinced http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5042
There are two neodymium vases that I suspect are Caithness, but I haven't any book covering their output. Is there a good website for Caithness?

Then what looks very Italian to me, but that is really outside my knowledge http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5045
Another smallish dish - could it be Sklo? http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5039
I thought this was Whitefriars as well, but can't find it in the catalogues - might it be Scandinavian? http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5050
And Finally http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5049 I have seen these before but cannot remember where or when?
Oh dear, that went on a bit didn't it :) I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to where to go to find these items, I just hate seeing them sitting there with little idea of who made them etc.

Hi Tim,
I think that your first little bowl is by Kaj Franck, but I really am not sure. :-\ Not much help really.
-
Hi,
Nothing from Sklo Union here.
regards,
Le Casson
-
The little blue 'whitefriars' looks like Holmegaard? and the last flint bowl ive seen
before, i think its modern Kosta or Orrefors.
Andy :-\
-
Caithness being built, only couple of hundred bits of glassware and a fifteen hundred weights so far - wil ad a lot more over the year.

Hi Tim,
I think that your first little bowl is by Kaj Franck, but I really am not sure. :-\ Not much help really.
Della, you're spot on - these bowls (which came in lots of nice colours) were designed by Kaj Franck and produced by both Nuutajarvi and Arabia. They always sell extremely well :-) And the last bowl in flint I'm pretty sure is Dartington.
-
Andy - thanks, I'll go hunting the Scandi stuff.
Frank - good to see the Caithness underway, I remember going round the Kings Lynn factory on a school trip about 18 years ago but they were only making very basic wares then.
Marcus - thanks for checking, I did get a couple of real bits (or at least I hope I did!) http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=332
Della and Pip - many thanks, 1 down ;D Any idea what the colour might be called? I can't decide wether it is bluish or greenish :-\ I'll go check the Dartington catalogues as well.
Any other thoughts?
-
Tim, it looks smokey grey in the photo - I've had these bowls in light blue, dark blue, dark green and amber - not the colour you've got. I'd say it was smoked personally. I have a photograph of the last lot I sold - one of which had an 'Arabia, Finland' sticker to the base. Bear with me, I'll find it and put it up here so you can see the other colours.
-
Here they are - you might be interested to know that this little group sold for nearly £60!!! :o

Now that is how I have only seen them photographed, Pip. That is why I was not totally sure. I should just go with my gut feeling more often. I have seen diagrams of them too, in my faithful little book. ;D
I better be on the look out for some of those little blighters >:D
-
I much prefer the blue ones ;D Thanks for the photo, Pip, they look lovely.
I can't find that flint bowl in the Dartington catalogues, mind you there are only a few available. Still looking.
-
I could be wrong but you could try searching Sowerby or Davidsons for this one?

I've seen this one listed as Muurla Lasi Finland and as a boxed version from Ravenhead so you can take your pick. ;D
-
Both are.
Who? Where? What?

The -5049 bowl is Flair by Ravenhead.
See fleaBay item 110070709841 for a pic with box.
-
Hi again - thanks for the additional help :) :) :)
Tigerchips - cheers I'll go hunting that route (That particular piece looks like several factories >:D)
Anne and Chris - Thank you. Not sure that Ravenhead is what I'd hoped for, but there you go. I see the one on ebay failed to sell, so I guess I'll stick mine in the garage and let it lurk.
Marcus - At least I got those right, thanks for the confirmation. Do I take it that the pattern number is not yet known for the taller vase? BTW I hear rumour of a Sklo Union book being written by Mark Hill, are you involved in that?
Thanks again everyone - just a few left ;D
-
Pattern number not known but might be later this month.
"BTW I hear rumour of a Sklo Union book being written by Mark Hill, are you involved in that?"
No. But I have heard a rumour about a book being written by the owner of sklounion.com
which Le Casson may have some involvement in.
-
BTW Marcus, I saw your name mentioned in the new DK Antiques & Collectables Price Guide which has, for once, a decent section on SU ;D
-
I think I may need a new bookshelf soon - just got to keep the glass off it long enough to get the books onto it >:D
-
:-[ :-[
Thank you, Pip,
My contribution for the last two years has been minor. Mark Hill kindly gave me the opportunity to comment on Sklo Union, a decision, I hope, that both he and Judith Miller, do not regret.
Regards,
Marcus

I found where I'd seen this listed as Muurla Lasi finally... it's on Peter Kay's site here:

That's an interesting find Anne, these have been debated for ages! There must be a sticker on it somewhere I guess?
-
It might be possible that there was a marketing arrangement with Ravenhead. After all, Ravenhead was quite the thing for the mid to lower end market in the 1970s and Muurla Lasi doesn't exactly trip off the English tongue. Looking at their current prices, it's not high-end stuff and much in the Ravenhead vein
-
Perhaps Peter can add more as it's his bowl... I'll ask him to look into this thread and comment.
-
Certainly interesting to see it with a Harrods box. Not the sort of thing I thought they would sell :)
Still haven't got anywhere with the neodymium vases or that italian-style vase if anyone would like to have another look ;D
-
Just found another one listed on eBay.com as Viking... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200081529619 ::)

The little gray dish is actually an ash tray and designed by Kaj Franck. They call it Häränsilmä (bullseye), which is not a name given by the designer. It´s numbered 6606 and made in Nuutajärvi Glassworks.

The Muurla thing is odd.. Some people "know" it is designed by Hardie Williamson for Ravenheas but it is also been found with a Muurla sticker and box. There really might have been some marketing arrangement between those two, Muurla and Ravenhead. Nowadays Muurla glass is mainly made in Poland by Rozalia.
