Title: Amber tulip vase - Webb / Whitefriars ???
Post by: Chris Harrison on February 13, 2007, 03:11:22 PM
Can anyone put a maker to this vase, please?

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5060

Footed amber tulip-shaped.  Circular ground punty mark on the base, but no etched signature (or any trace of one ever being present).

Height 7".  Very heavy.  Vertical ribbing, slightly curled where the rim was worked.

I put it on whitefriars.com a while back, but didn't get a nibble.  I can't find any reference in any of the WF catalogues or my Stourbridge books.

Thanks,
Chris

That orangey amber reminds of a couple of identified Krosno jugs I have

Thanks, Christine.  That's interesting.

I don't think the vase is really quite as orangey as it seems in the photo.  It's more like the WF golden amber from the late 1970s (i.e. lighter than the WF 1950s golden amber and 1970s gold FLC), and a lot lighter than the toffee amber colour of the Webb Wrythen series.

Hmm, how to describe colours...?

I forgot to say that it has quite a lot of wear on the base, so by the pricking of my thumbs I'd reckon it's 1950s or earlier.

I have one very similar in green, but without a ground pontil. The vase effect is more like a diamond-optic:

Not sure whether this helps.

Edit: looked at closely, I don't think they are related.

Hi,

The Amber is, I believe, Stuart & Sons. Most probably has a treacle hue, or glow, to the amber - especially when you look through the thicker areas??

The green vase I suggest is Thomas Webb & Sons - their molding, shape and colour.

Thanks, Nigel.

What would you consider a treacle hue?
I'd say that this is much more Golden Syrup!  :)

The Webb Wrythen vases and bowls would have more of a treacle hue, IMO.

Thanks Nigel. I did actually buy it hoping it was Webb, but the lack of the acid-etch stamp and no concave ground mark on the pontil did make me wonder.

Could it be Richardson, for Webb?

Hi, It is webb, I have had a few of these and they were put on the Whitefriars website under the section is it whitefriars? Everytime they said to me it was webb, even though there is no acid etch. Hope this is of help.
