Title: Has this base been sanded?

Hello People

This vase was advertised as Orrefors. Is this an example of sanding the base to disguise the fact it is unsigned and a second?

I would say that looks like natural wear IMHO

that is indeed natural wear. The Orrefors signature would be very light on the outer edge, and has probably worn to invisibility.

Thank you for your help. I've seen a few scratches at live auctions, but having read of sanding, I wondered what it looked like.

You have to wonder what people do to their stuff for this to be 'natural' - dragged it across rocks?

The way to differentiate between natural wear and artifically aged or sanded pieces is to examine the orientation of the scratches.

Normal wear will be random scratches with no pattern.  Artifically aged or sanded will have rows or parallel scratches or a circular pattern depending on the method of mechanical scratching.

Probably just 40 years of reguar dusting and moving, rather than 40 years sitting in a display cabinet with less frequent dusting or 40 years in a box
