Title: pressed glass sugar? bowl identification please

I wonder if anyone could give me some information on this bowl.  I got it in a job lot of glass and it intrigues me but I know nothing about it. It appears to have had silver/mercury? in the decoration at the top of the bowl

Hi rosarae. What you have is a piece of EAPG or Early American Pattern Glass. The pattern is called Reverse 44, the silver at the top is platinum staining and the makers mark is the isignia of the United States Glass Company. This pattern dates to 1912. A very nice pattern, Terry

Thanks for that info Terry.  Can you tell me what the bowl was used for.  Was it a general purpose item or did it have a designated use - sugar or bon bon dish for example?

The use could be anything. Footed bowls came in 3 sizes. 5 1/2 inch and 8 1/2 inch with flared sides.  The 7 inch diameter bowl came with straight sides. The bonbon had handles. It was a very extensive pattern.

Hi, I've had this piece tucked away in a cupboard that I picked up at a flea market. It looks 'similar' to the one that was posted here, except that it doesn't have a makers mark. Is this American as well?

Not all pieces contain the mark and according to my sources, this pattern has not been reproduced. U.S. Glass was a big company and export catalogs are known. So I think you can safely assume that yes it is the same. Terry
