mod: topic split from Cafe discussion
Hi,
I'm new to this message board, although I have been reading and learning from it for a week now. I am a regular glass collector/fanatic, now turned seller. I am selling some pieces of glass on ebay, as well as kitchenalia and china.
Hi Roz - nice to meet you - what sort of glass are you into? It'd be lovely to see some of your stuff :-) Don't forget, you can always post a message in the Glass Market Place if you have some things for sale you'd like to advertise.
Thanks for the welcome Pip. What sort of glass am I into? How long have you got? :) The first criteria is colour - green. I like the C20th green Bagley and Davidson and unidentified pressed glass. It's still possible to pick up really nice pieces at car boots for relatively low prices. Having said that, my favourite piece of green Bagley (a frosted green bowl with fishes and weed all over it) was bought from an antique shop for far more money than I would normally spend on myself. The next criteria is shape and overall aesthetic quality. In this category are the modern pieces I buy at craft fairs from real live glass blowers and artists - usually bowls. Finally, there's the gut instinct category. Into this category falls a lovely piece of Guernsey Island Glass that is a fair look-alike for a Pallme-Koenig piece; a Kaj Franck salt that I should really be selling but I just keep going back and admiring it, which means it will be staying; a chunky Orrefors bowl; and so on.
Unfortunately, my own collection isn't photographed yet. I only invested in a digital camera recently, and it's in constant use at the moment for ebay purposes. I must get round to photographing my own stuff some time...

Roz, have you got Angela's (this forum's owner) book Bagley Glass? An excellent resource for identifying this marque.

I can never bring myself to sell a piece of glass that I really like though - I'd just go onto bread and dripping for a week rather than do that ;D
Worth uploading your collection to Anne's GlassGallery (for GMB use) so we can all have a peek :)

Hi David and Pip,
Sorry I didn't reply to you both last weekend. :-[ I had a recurrence of an ongoing health problem which means I have to stop what I'm doing and just gather myself together again. Having done that, I'm now catching up with outstanding stuff like replying to you both.
Pip posted a picture of a Bagley bowl and asked if mine was like it. It's not. My bowl is frosted green with fish and weeds all over, and the fishes' tails and fins make an irregular rim to the bowl. It's packed away at the moment, awaiting the long-promised finishing off of an extension, in which I will have proper display cabinets for my glass.
David asked if I have Angela's book about Bagley. I don't yet. I am buying books on glass on a gradual basis, out of the proceeds of my ebay sales. Once I have bought it, I may well find that the bowl I was sold as Bagley is not in fact Bagley! :o
Both have suggested I post pictures of my collectionon the Gallery. I promise that I will do so once it's all been unwrapped and sorted out. I have some small pieces around me, mainly the recent acquisitions, so I don't suffer withdrawal symptoms!
Once again, sorry I didn't reply last weekend. If I do go silent, it's because I'm having another little fight with my health.

Hi, Roz, and welcome.
Is this your green Bagley bowl (with thanks to Bernard C for posting the link in another thread here)?

If so, the curator, Richard van Riel, maight like to hear from you, since he doesn't seem to have confirmation that it was made in green. I think Bernard knows him.
And I'd be very interested in a picture for the website I'm putting together on Sherdley and Ravenhead, including work their principal designer Alexander Hardie Williamson (AHW) did for other companies - including the Marine bowl for Bagley.
Hi Heidi,
I've just replied, thinking it was Pip who posted the picture of the Bagley bowl. Sorry! :-[ I've had a little health fight during the week and didn't get back to the boards until today. My bowl is not like this. It's green frosted glass with fish and weeds all over, and the fishes' tails and fins make an irregular rim to the bowl. It may not be Bagley, of course. The seller was fairly convincing, and I just love it anyway, so if it's not then I won't be too sad.
Sorry I can't do a picture at the moment. My older items in my collection are packed away for a bit longer, until the extension is finished off. My newer acquisitions are around me.

So sorry to hear that Roz but please don't worry about replying quickly - no-one would think the worst of you for taking your time to reply. Anyway, that's the beauty of message boards - posts get replied to days, weeks and in some cases even months after originally being posted. There are quite a few people on here with recurring health problems so I'm sure everyone understands fully. Glad to hear you're back on your feet again.

I suspect your bowl isn't Bagley. From your description, particularly the point about the fishes' tails forming an irregular rim it sounds more like Walther's 'Sonnenfisch' bowl. An exmple is shown on pamela's site here: http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/00683.jpg

I've just split these topics from the Cafe discussion, so other members can see it properly. Pamela might be able to offer a suggestion, for example.

This is it! Many thanks! How interesting that the so-called glass expert in that antiques shop didn't know what he was selling!
I have another piece of more modern Waltherglas, and hadn't thought to link the two.

Many thanks. I have unwittingly been collecting Walther as well - I recognised the little Victoria basket and I think another bowl. Note to self: I really must get my own collection sorted.

Hi, Roz. Glad you got an ID on your bowl - it looks lovely. And no worries at all about delayed reply - we all have other lives to lead (even Frank ;)). I've had recurrent health problems myself, so I know what it's like when you're trying to keep more balls in the air than you have the strength for. Hope you're feeling better now.

Hi Heidi,
Yes, it's the balls in the air that get to me - when they all start falling on me at once! Fine now, thanks.
The bowl is lovely. I'd like to know roughly how old it is, for completeness.
