Post by: suzi99 on February 19, 2007, 01:21:44 AM
Hello I have recently bought this paperweight thinking that perhaps it is whitefriars but would like confirmation on this if possible.

There's a lot of clear bubble balls out there. I have a couple and they're Chinese.

Do you have a picture of the base?

I would say definintely not suzi as the whitefriars bubble weihgts had one large central bubble with lots of smaller ones surrounding it and your is nothing like this.
Incidentally, there is an interesting story about these Whitefriars bubble weights. The glassmakers were allowed to work an extra optional shift to earn more money and Ron Wilkinson was working this shift. He could knock out these bubble weights like mad and was making the red version - but he forgot to put this central bubble in, he had made dozens before he noticed this so he told the other glassmakers and they all left out this central bubble when they made them so it is rare to find a red weight with a central bubble. If you do, iti is one made before this matake occurred
