Title: Jobling pine cone/fir cone/larch... what IS the correct name?
Post by: josordoni on February 19, 2007, 06:50:10 PM
I have seen this pattern described variously as Pine Cone, Fir Cone, Larch to name the three main ones.

It must have a correct name - which is it?

thanks!

Ok, so I am replying to myself...

I had been checking ebay, and only googling pine cone - I had dashed off the enquiry before heading out to an auction, where I hope to buy aforesaid bowl.

Now I've got back and googled fir cone as well, I've found Glen's article http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/FirJoblingCone.html  which of course, hadn't come up when I was looking for Pine Cone...

duhhhhhhhhhhhh

Anyway, I GOT aforesaid bowl, hope it is good, seems rather glittery than opalescent.  It is wrapped up at the moment, but I know it has a registration number to the base in the same font as the Jobling bird bowl I had before.

Is this exact pattern faked at all?

Never seen it faked but it was made in reasonable quantities

Rarest colours are opaque black and opaque white (don't think they ever did it in tortoiseshell)

The vase in opalique is the most stunning

There was always the rumour that Sowerby bought the mould after Jobling closed down -but I've never seen any in Sowerby colours

Cheers

Mike

PS Great to meet you Sunday -Sorry I was so busy -glad to see the Loetz formosa went well

Hi Mike,

this one is just very glossy, the only opalescent ones I've seen before the glass is sort of more matt... I've taken pics now, the light is about right for you to see the "glassiness", so I'll pop the link to the gallery on here shortly...

I was great to see you too, but don't be sorry about being busy!  Got to be a good thing, it costs enough to exhibit, you need to get your money's worth.

I was also pleased about the Formosa ( 8) )... and to the USA so no VAT to pay!  Yay!!

Thanks guys - all the pictures I have seen show the background glass so much more blue and opally that I was a little concerned.  Not that I was SO concerned I didn't buy it of course...

Up it goes then... ;D
