Title: Decanter with cut grass/wheat pattern?
Post by: Anne on February 23, 2007, 05:57:26 AM
This has no marks at all so I'm wondering if anyone recognises it please?  It has a polished pontil, and the decoration is nicely cut, it's a sort of grass/wheat pattern... pics below

Hi Anne, although i believe Tappio Wirkkala designed a decanter very similar to your's, i think your's is probably earlier, i had one the same as your's when i lived in Ireland but it was plain, when it was sold at auction it was described as, Irish Edwardian Mallet decanter?? but as we know auction don't always get it right   :-\

Irish Edwardian Mallet? Wow Sue, that sounds impressive! :) Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll see what I can find along those lines.   If it was a TW design I'd think it'd be signed wouldn't it, so I reckon he's not in the frame?

Hi Anne,

I bought one of these (minus the engraving) at the time I picked up them there Chance sherry glasses.

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5290

Approx 10.25" tall incl stopper. 7.5" to the rim.

My immediate thought was "this feels like Dartington".  Whaddya think?

Take care,
Chris

Hi Dexter,
That one's different to mine.  It's a different height (doesn't say whether with or without stopper), has a thicker base, and a different size and shape of stopper.
Mine's circumference is about the same, though (not the diameter, as the eBay item says...)

Sue, mine's definitely not the same as the eBay one - that's a Frank Thrower design (see also here: http://www.cambridgeglassfair.com/exhibitions/focusarchive/2004-09-fg-decanters.htm ). Mod: Link dead

Chris, I think we're shopping in a parallel universe!  >:D  I just measured my decanter and it's 27cm high (10½")  to the top of the stopper and 41cm (16") in circumference.  Mine doesn't feel like Dartington - the glass doesn't look the same as my other Dartington pieces, it's not quite as clear somehow, and Dartington is often acid stamped D on the base and there is nothing on this decanter.

I know Anne, i put it up for comparison, i still think your's is older especialy with the tinge to the glass.

Yep, I realised that Sue, but just in case anyone else was following us (or not as the case may be! ;))

Just going back to your Irish Edwardian Mallet observation earlier, the base of this has very little wear so if it's older it's not been moved around very much - perhaps kept in a cabinet?  But it doesn't feel like an old piece somehow... the levelled off top (reminds me of the gulvase tops) and the stopper feels too modern...   I have to admit to being stumped by this so far.  ::)
