Whitefriars or is it Murano bowl
« on: April 09, 2008, 08:32:34 PM »
Hi
Could this be a Whitefriars piece or is it Murano to look like Whitefriars, there are the controlled encased bubbles the colour looks right the feel seems right but is it. i am confused with this one, the pontil show wear as to give it some age,50s  60s  stands 2.5ins at the back side a fraction more from front to back it measures 7ins and the wings 6ins the colour is a Bronze/light brown colour, this glass is made very well indeed.

If Whitefriars would it be Powel or if Murano Suggso maybe, any ideas please.

Definitely not Whitefriars.

The closest WF did was pattern 9564: http://www.whitefriarsorg.org/memb1/cat-64/p12.jpg

Hi Nic
Put this on Whitefriars and they are suggesting Murano at first i thought Whitefriars because i bought it at the same times as this little red piece, below.

But now i know different, so i will take a look at azelismia, suggestion and look at erickson, thanks both for looking at the post and for your input, appreciated.

Found something simular to this Bowl on the net today, and it was advertised as being Murano Art glass bowl red orange bullicante bubble. so was wondering if the ashtray/bowl was of the same make, cant find anything about erickson?

As any one got any links for erickson please.

Murano isn't a maker or brandname - it's an island that houses many different glassmakers. And 'bullicante' just refers to the controlled bubble pattern.

Hope this clarifies it a bit.

Nic
thanks  for the clarity what i need to do then is try to find which glass maker? which i know is going to be hard if not impossible. that is something i have learned over the last few wks, if nowt else.

So that is why when someone is selling a piece of glass and they dont know the origin they just say Murano or vintage bohemian czech art glass etc.  :-[

It's generally down to lazy assumption, sometimes it's deceitfulness, and a lot of the time it's just to get people to look at the substandard glass for sale in their auction auction - like those that pack their auction titles with unrelated keywords and company names. One that I noticed this evening was "Art Glass Vase Possibly Scandinavian. Not Whitefriars."

Regards your bowl, you will probably just have to settle on a broad Murano attribution - too many factories produced the same shapes in the same colours to pin a lot of the island's output down to specifics.

The major problem is that the few of the many small Czech or Murano factories have/had any records or catalogues and everyone everywhere copied each other's ideas. I have shelves and boxes full of unidentified uranium glass.

Geoffrey Wills "The country life pocket book of glass" won't help you identify much glass but it does give a concise overview of the world history of glass and give you an idea of why identifying so much glass is difficult. It's out of print but worth reading if you can pick it up cheaply.

Last night i found out a bit of info which may relate to this bowl.

First i found out that FAW Johanson bought & sold art glass from Orrefors and some of the glass was like this ashtray with controlled bubbles pattern.

At the same time i saw a bowl with the same folded lip style which is usually attributed to Archimede Seguso or Alfred Barbini. and was around the 1950s so i am wondering can anyone tell me if they to have saw or heard this,
