Cameo ? glass snuff bottle and little spoon
« on: September 29, 2011, 02:53:04 PM »
I bought something very exciting (for me lol) today.
A little red over clear cameo glass (at least I think it is) snuff bottle.
I avoid anything like this normally as I haven't a clue about them and they are rather small.   However despite this one having about 4 chips on it I still liked it and thought I might learn something.
It's red over clear, the top looks like it isn't original to the bottle possibly, but it has it's little spoon.  Can anyone date this for me (I'm aware of reproductions/recent bottles being around etc so don't worry about upsetting me lol).
It has a bevelled rim on the top. Forgot to take a base photo but it has a foot cut into the bottle with a ground and polished flat edge round it.  The lid is translucent glass knobble sat on a flat green glass disc.
Any information gratefully received  :sun:
thanks
m

Coincidentally, I purchased a small snuff bottle a few weeks ago, albeit different material to yours. Snuff bottles are notoriously difficult to authenticate, its hard to say from the photo, although I would tend to lean on the side of this being a modern copy from China. Does the bottle and spoon have have any signs of wear / use etc...

Have you looked on ebay under snuff bottles, there are dozens of very similar Chinese ones. Hopefully I'm wrong.  :)

Greg you're probably right, I've no way of telling to be honest.  In terms of wear, no it hasn't got any snuff in, yes it is damaged quite considerably (though I don't think that counts as wear lol) and yes the glass looks seedy, a bit dirty in the clear glass make up as it were (the bottle is scraped inside as well, I don't know what that means though as it could have been done deliberately I guess).
I've put a couple of closer up pics on.

I lived out east for a few years and although I don't remember seeing this particular bottle, I did see lots of others. Most commonly ox bone.
The Chinese and Vietnamese are pretty good fakers when they want to be. I do know that it generally keeps the prices of stuff down and people tend to err on the side of caution and collect something different altogether.

Yes I've lived in the Far East as well and travel there whenever it is possible (not often enough recently).  If I had a choice, it would always be my number one.
I'm under no illusions of the ability/skill of the crafts people, which can be utterly amazing.
The one thing that I'm highly suspicious of is the interior finish on this.
Having said that, it didn't cost me a huge amount (it's very obviously chipped in more than one place  ;D) and it's incredibly pretty.  If it is carved glass, it doesn't really matter who did it when.  I'm very excited by and  happy with my purchase  :hiclp:

I wouldn't like to definitively say its a modern one, its just extremely difficult to determine with these.

Certainly some of the old bottles reach fairly good prices, having said that I have also seen a few modern snuff bottles also sell online. People do seem to still buy them due to the large amount of work involved in may cases.

You just need the snuff now to go with it!

At the end of the day, if you like it and the price was right ... even if it was a little over, you win some and you lose some. Looks like an attractive enough piece.

I bet you'd happier than the person who paid big for the damaged Sautner piece.

Oh....well we're not talking anywhere near the Sautner price lol  ;D and I'm pretty sure we're not talking anywhere near that quality .
Fortunately I have not a clue about paperweights either and nor do I have that kind of money to burn.  However I believe it resold at a considerable amount with the damage disclosed - and incredibly beautiful it was too.  I would have loved to have that piece.
Greg,  ;D on the snuff.   I can't find a match but there are some that are similar, so quite possibly modern but I think I'll never know unless I come across a collector who could help.  This will most likely be the only one in my collection though.

cool!  :hiclp: that didn't come up in my searches  I think something of Keith's did but not these.
So, my red one isn't the same as your round one but seems to have more similarities in the foot with your longer one.  So, do yours have a cut polished and bevelled rim on the top?
