NO idea about this one
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:56:13 AM »
Hi All

haven't bought much lately but a friend of mine turned up with this today. it is about 200mm (8") high and weighs about 1kg. Very solid with several large bubbles trapped inside and a broken off pontil.

Looks as if it could be old but who knows - maybe you :X:

Might be better off in "Glass". Interesting but I don't have clue.

Hi

This looks very much like it is Czech in origin simply by the style used and probably dates from the 1950s onwards

Hope this helps and gives you somewhere to start

If the Czech connection doesn't work out, perhaps Germany is another option. Swirled bubble patterns appear a lot in German glass, though I've never seen a shape like that.

It looks similar Maltese or Isle of White kind of stuff. Alum Bay glass has pontils left on like that.

You say 'very solid' - that's a little confusing, is it solid? Is it a door stop? I assume you originally listed in paperweights.

Hi Scavo thanks for the ideas, it is a vase albeit with 2 very small openings but for its size it weighs a lot.

Now I see it.

You could always email IoW, Alum Bay if not at least to rule them out. They are both still going and I believe they do respond. They have catalogues online but I don't think I've seen this shape in them.
