If it was from the other side of the pond, then that might increase the chances that an old mould has been re-used - I believe a variety of older pressed glass designs have been seeing the light of day in recent decades. Think these things were produced originally mostly around the period 1870 - 1900.
Glossy jet black and matt black finishes on pressed glass are common, but I don't recall hearing the expression 'liquorice colour'.
