large mustard yellow vase
« on: September 04, 2015, 05:07:00 PM »
Hi. New to the message board. Have a large, yellowy mustard vase 13 1/2" high. Pictures have come out a little pale. The colour graduates - paler at the top and quite dark at the bottom. Would appreciate help identifying it if possible. Thanks

It is difficult to say with any degree of certainty who made this vase but there are a few observations.
the colour is achieved by dipping an opal glass jn a coloured one before blowing it out. Where the outer layer is thickest, the colour is darker.
this type of glass is called 'opalina'  in Italian - and Italy is one large source of vases in this technique, especIally the town of Empoli near Florence.
However, any factory in the business of makng lampshades uses this technique and examples have been seen to come out of Sweden (Elme) , Czechoslovakia and now China - il'm forgetting a few here.

Hi Ivo,
Thanks for the information.
Guess its off to the bootsale with this vase though! I have a few bits of whitefriars and Stennett Willson - so no room for this one.
Regards
