Glass Bibliography - update
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:05:07 PM »
The Glass Bibliography at http://www.ysartglass.com/Booklist/Topics.htm
is being converted into a bibliographic database, during building it will only be accessible to Glass-Study subscribers but once the conversion has been completed it will become freely available. After the migration another 20,000 titles will be slowly added to the existing 1400. Followed by gradual inclusion of any omitted title.

Publishers (or enthusiasts) can contribute updates by providing a file in Bibtex format. Others will be able to suggest feedback, or review briefly, on individual titles in their possession.

I am reviewing and updating the existing bibliography entries, about two weeks to complete. The original built 1998/9 had a lot of missing data and embarrasingly some bad errors  :-[

The update will include some information about contents for most titles as well as details of all printings and editions. While it is a lot easier now, it is amazing how many booksellers give differing information about the same book.

Does anyone know why this book was withdrawn shortly after publication, possibly only in US. Copyright seems unlikely as the authors are from Christies and the images taken from their auction catalogues.
@book { ,
   pages = {223 pages 93 colour 264 b/w},
   publisher = {Thames & Hudson, London},
   title = {Glass by GallĂ©},
   year = {1984},
   abstract = {Authors are from Christies auction house. The US edition (only?) was withdrawn shortly after it was released. - ISBN Number: 050023387X. Editions/printings: Harry N Abrams, (0810909863) New York, 1984},
   author = {Duncan , Alastair and De Bartha , Georges }
}

I would like to find someone, or two, to take on the role of bibliography manager, with a four year commitment. In return you will get free life membership to all of my pay-sites and add value to the glass community knowledge base. The existing bibliography gets more hits than the other sites.

The amount of effort is as much as you want to do, no special knowledge is needed apart from the ability to Google and rephrase any comments about a title. The task will be to try and add in all locatable glass related titles (books, magazines, journals, papers, video, thesii, catalogues, official/government papers, brochures and pamphlets first published from 1950-2012) expanding the database as you go by filling in the example layout as in the example above, pasting it into a text box, pressing a couple of buttons. Additionally, reviewing the categories and determining others that would be useful. Persuading publishers to help keep it up to date by providing information on their glass titles. In the unlikely event that this goes to publication as a book you would of course share in any royalties. Timer needed... hmmm... I manage around 60 titles a day but this because many of the titles already included are the more well known that have had a lot of reprints, it was based on all glass titles listed on the web during 1998/9. Perhaps up to 10 hours a week would suffice.

I intend to concentrate on titles published prior to 1950, around 20,000 titles.

David - I have just added in to the bibliography 31 titles by or about Chance Brothers from 1850 to 1931. Catalogues, articles, papers and books. Including the article already in the Study library.

Perhaps you can expand the abstracts if you research these titles.

I have not include Chances patents in the 1850-1900 glass patent extracts currently in the Glass-Study itself, I will add those to the bibliography once I have completed digitising them I will add them into the biblio too.

Do you know of any other publications regarding Chance?

While only about halfway through the revision of the original bibliography, the new version contains over 600 titles and is now available publicly (link). It includes books, periodicals, journals, trade catalogues, pamphlets, videos, exhibition catalogues... indeed, anything informational related to glass that can be picked up and carried away. so no websites (yet)

It will require another week or two to complete the revision. If you own any of the titles listed please send me a brief review of its contents and usefulness. Any major errors you have discovered in books can also be included. Some of the existing reviews were provided by members of the Compuserve glass forum in the late 1990's, others are from authors and publishers or paraphrased from multiple bookseller blurbs.

Each entry should be dated to the first edition with dates and pagination of subsequent printings and editions, these should all be up to date. While some books issued since 2000 have been added, there are currently few such titles and details of these with opinions would be welcome.

The number of categories can be expanded in the future, suggestions welcomed.

The first version was a poor job and the number of errors corrected highly embarrassing, hopefully this time round it has an appropriate quality. After the initial revision I will commence adding data on titles pre 1940.
