Whitefriars?
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:38:42 PM »
Hello,

I think I know the answer to this but, I do not have a full whitefriars catalogue to double check.

The piece isn't in the usual whitefriars style even though it has the whitefriars sticker on it. It is rather large at 10 1/2 inches in height and is heavy and solid. The base has signs of wear and the lip of the piece is nicely finished off with a Whitefriars feel. There is a deep engraved pattern around the outside.

The colour is slightly deceptive in the picture. It is quite a dark blue but with the light behind it appears much lighter.

Any thoughts,

Wes

Hi Wes have a look for traces of glue around edge of label with a magnifier if you see any you know its dodgy , i am 99.9% sure its not W/Fs some people take labels off small cheap bits and stick them on big dodgy bits.
it happens also does the edge of label look like its been picked at.

I agree with John.  The label is also pre- 1963 design, and does not to my eye fit the style of glass for the period. Base looks dodgy to me too.  Emmi

One day I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. William Hartnell

Hi,

Apart from saying I don't for one moment believe this to be a piece of W/F, I thought I ought to mention that the decoration appears not to be engraved, but unpolished cutting.

This type of cutting is much crisper when found on a piece of Powell (W/F) and with a finer finish to the matt effect. I'd agree with John that the label has probably come off a small cheap piece in order to upgrade this and massage its potential value a seller.

Sorry, not the news you want Wes.

Cheers, Nigel
