Topic: DOES THE SUN FADE GLASS???

Hello,

I was at an Antique Fair today and was informed by one of the dealers that I should keep glass out of the sun as the glass could fade!!! Can this be right? I know there are many reasons to keep glass out of the sun, but i didn't imagine fading would be an issue.

David, I've never heard that either, it can change some glass from clear to a shade of purple: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,8075.0.html or set fire to things if left in the sun.

I wonder if it's a bit of creative thinking on the seller's part?

I suppose it is possible that there could be colour changes, other than the purpling (or grey in this country with it's barbeque summers  :24: ) caused by the presence of manganese, as a result of other colorants changing their valence state but with the amount of UV we get here, you would be unlikely to still be alive to see it.

Cheers Guys, I knew I was new to this glass collecting but when a ' professional ' dealer tells you something ( for no reason, there was no sale involved in this discussion ) you do start to wonder if maybe he knows something you dont.
 I'll sleep easy tonight knowing the laws of physics are as i thought. :ac1:
