Denis Mann demonstrating copper wheel engraving in Edinburgh
« on: October 08, 2010, 07:58:24 PM »
Denis gave a fascinating demo with live video on the screen behind him so we could see his hands and exactly what he was doing. What a lovely gentleman with such passion for his art. He also showed us some of his favourite pieces, some of his own work and let a student (who seemed very keen on engraving and had wanted to know if Alison Kinnaird gave master classes) have a go. I found it all very moving.
1. Picking up the lubricant abrasive mixture
2. The wheel in action
3. Denis in action
4. Denis teaching

This was for me one of the high points of the conference and was a challenge to get it organised and working as it did completely free of hitches. The split screen AV set-up allowed slides on the left and live video feed on the right. Denis had intended to bring a cameraman but in the end he could not come... we had just over an hour to complete the physical set-up and get camera and lighting right.
Credit to Denis and his cameraman who had worked out the advance details with ECA AV technician Roger Hunter . There was no chance of a trial run and Roger was not working during the conference!

The lathe that Denis brought was originally at ECA while Helen Monro Turner was there - which added to the history of the occasion.

It was actually Helen's own lathe I believe (I think that's what he said).

I thought it was a 50/50 chance it was Helen M-T's lathe, there were two, nobody's exactly sure which was hers..... (info. gleaned in smoker's corner at the front door. It's a very useful place for extra snippets of info. )
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Earth without art is just eh.

And the other one is still at ECA. Does not really matter as HMT probably bought both!
