small clear ribbed "posy bowl"?
« on: May 23, 2011, 03:38:20 PM »
I got this in a lot of 3 "posy bowls". I really only wanted the other two so thinking of selling this one but I know nothing about it and how to describe it (aside from the obvious). It's about 8 cm tall and has a snapped off pontil mark on the bottom. Can anyone tell me anything about it please? thanks
Julie

Julie I can't help but the shape reminds me of what I think are called rose bowls.  If you look that up you may come across something perhaps?

I've just tried search terms like rose bowl, plus 'optic rib' 'optic spiral rib' with no luck...

Thanks. This looks like quite a good book about them http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1582210098/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

Does anyone has this by any chance?

Julie I'll have a look round, because I'm sure there is a fantastic rose bowl site somewhere on the net where you may be able to get a lot of info (and there maybe a contact who can help you).

This page on the Glass Museum which covers the differences between Victorian rose bowls and later Murano reproductions, and is written by Johanna Billings herself. It took a lot of finding to google!

:hiclp: well done Cathy - I've been googling in between doing other things and couldnt' find it again.  I also know I came across one with a whole display of rose bowls whilst searching for satin airtrap and I can't find that now either :spls:

Thanks so much Cathy (and flying_free). I googled and was overwhelmed with the 3 million hits! I did read that page you found - very interesting. I think my rose bowl is Victorian but no other idea about it yet. It is small and plain so probably limited desirability even if it is old and from a known maker.

I looked at my local library catalogue but they don't have her book. There used to a a London-wide catalogue but that web site doesn't appear to work any longer.
