Daum...Nancy...Champagne glass enamelled and decanter
« on: February 16, 2013, 10:49:44 AM »
Hi there all
Have been away from glass for some time as been little on offer.
I have just yesterday walked into these items. I have searched the net to find more info on when these were made although i have pinned down the style of the decanter to late 1890. The Plant...seems to be tumble weed...or perhaps some special French flower.
These items are signed as seen on base of decanter, which i have not washed as yet.
Any help indicating where i may find a link or picture which details these, i would be so grateful for.
Many thanks for looking

Meadowsweet and elderflower aren't the same but that looks more like cow parsley to me. Lovely glass Norman

Funnily enough, I didn't think meadowsweet and elderflower were the same either - until I googled and found that image - with a cordial recipe - I must have misinterpreted it while assuming it was me that was wrong.

Meadowsweet grows in hedgerows and fields, elderflower is a tree.
But it's not tumbleweed!  ;)

According to the Daum book*  these gilt articles date from the "late nineteenth and early twentieth" century. A twin to your decanter is shown, only with thistles instead of an umbelliferous herb.

Now, why didn't I say "umbeliferous herb"?  ::)
It would have covered what I meant and saved me embarrassment.
A Thistle decorated set would be a lovely complement to this one.

Hi again
Thank you so much for the help and Ivo as always so informative.
The tumbleweed yes would be more desert like...rather Milkweed....

Being unable to find a drinking glass as shown....and would really love to see one as i have three different sizes :
The Champagne as shown and then there are these two in different sizes....rather an unusual suite i would guess.

Ivo thanks for that info....i have just found a similar glass by Galle  dated 1894/97 be it decorated with flowers and a dragonfy ....but similar shape and gilding.
Under Emille Galle et le verre...there is a drinking glass which states the following :
Verre ä vin Ombellas 1903/4
This glass was acid etched...rather special i guess.
Ref Book : Musée De L`Ècole De Nancy....Somogy Editions DÀRT
Pages 76....glass shape
Pages 87 Ombellas

Still need to research as see a Daum example...but will get there,
Once again thanks you all for the help and time given
Norman
