Old Goblet - ID Help Please!
« on: August 17, 2014, 12:45:00 PM »
I would appreciate your help in identifying the country and age of this large goblet. My guess is continental c1750s, but it could be a later reproduction, or that the engraving is not contemporary with the glass.

The goblet measures 8 1/2 inches tall with a 3 1/2 inch bowl and 4 1/4 inch foot. The stem is hollow blown with some nice knops that are reminiscent of Silesian stems. There is what appears to be an inch-long piece of charred wood within the stem itself, which has given the upper part of the stem a sooty/dusky appearance. There is no way to know if this is deliberate or not. Sorry - doesn't come out on the photo as I took it against a black background.  The glass has a folded foot.

The engraving not very fine, though well executed. There is a large armorial crest on one side, and what appears to be an arrangement of flowers on the other.

Many thanks for your help

SimonD

hello Simon  -  thanks for the good pix.         We do have people here who are good at older Continental drinking glasses, but might suggest that if possible you post one more pic showing the underside of the foot  -  not guaranteed to provide the answer, but often a lot can be determined from the foot. :)
