Whitefriars coffin vase sizes
« on: July 15, 2016, 06:26:15 PM »
I know that Whitefriars made their 9686 'coffin' vases in 5 inch height, but does anybody know if they also made them in different sizes?

Thanks

Dear Matt,

I do not believe so. No reference either in Jackson or Evans books.

Have you seen one?

Kind Regards

Andrew

The coffin vases were mould blown so are generally one size, however they do vary slightly due to being cold finished. This brings its own problems, insofar as cold finished rims are less robust than fire polished rims so are susceptible to chips and can be ground down to hide the damage. This will also give different heights.

Funny you mention that Marc, because I've not seen many, but of the few I've seen, two had chips right inside the rim, which could have been repaired, invisibly.

Yes Andrew, I've seen what looks very much like a kingfisher blue coffin vase, but it is 6'' tall. I know there are fakes of several Whitefriars designs, so maybe it's a copy.

They are easily damaged Sue and the way to tell if it's been ground down is to look at the top of the texturing. There is about 1/4" before the texturing starts.

There are no "fake" coffins as such, but the mould did go to St John Crystal on the Isle of Man and they made some but not in Whitefriars colours.

I previously have seen a larger coffin which was also in blue but it wasnt Whitefriars and as Mark said these were blown into iron moulds so they are all the same.
