Topic: Sowerby pattern 1381 honey or marmalade.

Some photos of a Sowerby pattern 1381 honey or marmalade. Described by the owner as "approx 5.5" (14cm) high and 4" (10cm) across lid". (Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Bes Wendy).

I can't recall having seen an example of this particular Sowerby pattern before.

Shown on page 35 of the Sowerby pattern book XI of 1885.

Incidentally, this is shown as a registered design in the pattern book, but the owner assures me that the example here is unmarked.

I imagine from the pattern number and the style of the design that the design would probably have been registered in 1878 or possibly in early 1879 (with RD number probably between the low 320000s up into the low 330000s). I have checked the RD lists in Thompson and Cottle for potential clues but to no avail.

If anyone has an example of a similar pattern 1381 piece to hand, I would appreciate it if they would check it for a registry date lozenge to assist in tracing the RD number for the design.

Looks to be Rd. 319586 dated 20th March 1878 - one from a batch of five on that day.               My photo is very poor - I'll do best to edit and improve, and am sure you will at least be able to see the shape is a match  -  it's one of those purple pencil drawings!!

have improved somewhat over the original  -  what would we do without Picasa!              For some reason I didn't snap the entire object - there are many drawings in the Kew books where the Victorian clerks were obviously economizing with space and stuck too many on one page, which means some overlap with partial loss of some drawings.             The culprits can mostly be carefully held back when photographing, so not really sure what happened with this one  -  anyway think there's enough there so that the outline shape can be seen, plus the ears (or whatever they are) protruding on opposite sides of the rim.
