Hi,
I found this in the recycling area of a landfill site - couldn’t resist taking it home. Magpie  :D
I’m still undecided as to whether it’s modern or has some age.
Apart from some wear around the fitter aperture it looks almost brand new.

Its raised decoration could I suppose have been applied by a machine with perhaps the aid of
a stencil  - I wouldn’t know whether this suggests old or new.

It’s fairly thin walled - there’s quite a bit of iridescence.
If you hold it up to the light you can catch glimpses of red.

Ht - 22cm ( a bit over 8.5” )
Diam of fitter - 3cm ( 1 1/8” )

Any help appreciated- many thanks for looking. :)

I think these are relatively modern, as in 20th century, possibly no newer than 1970s, but not reproductions. Yes the enamelling does look stencilled, possibly by hand, as it's very thick

Hi Christine, many thanks for your reply, as always much appreciated  :)
I thought it might be enamel but wasn’t absolutely sure.

I use these shades  with a little tealight and plain glass votive in them … especially the white, satin finish art deco styled ones are very effective. Perhaps nothing new here but whenever I have visitors I end up giving them away because people love them so much and they're so easy to find here and not expensive.

Relatively modern, a company that I was involved with in the U.S. made similar items in the 70's-80's. They would buy the blanks , primarily from Mexico, but also available from a couple factories in Europe and silkscreen the decoration. The depth of the decoration was determined by the material they used for silk screening. Some of it would be very thick and would produce a raised decoration. It was then fired in a decorating kiln.

Hi,

Anne - Sounds a great idea, with Christmas just around the corner I might give it a go - perhaps
as a table centrepiece.
I’m still thinking about it however - I don’t want to risk having to give it away   ;D

Fuhrman Glass - Many thanks for your interesting and informative reply.
Presumably by the 70s 80s everything would have been done by machines.

Thanks

Scott

70's and 80's still had a few hand shops producing some of these wares. At this time Crisa of Mexico had a huge factory and did a lot of machine glass but still a little hand work. I used to sell for Cristales Y Pantallas in Monterey in that time and they were all hand production. There were some other in Mexico as well that were hand production.

I think there were still some hand shops in Greece and Italy making some similar items.

Hi,
I’ve had another good look at my lampshade and I’m pretty sure it’s been machine made - everything
looks too uniform - its ruffled rim, ribbing, decoration etc.
So, if I stick a tea light under it and it ex/im-plodes it won’t be a disaster   :-\

Really interesting info you’ve provided - many thanks.

Hi Anne Tique,
One final photo of my lampshade.
We’ve used led lights instead of a tea light-same difference though  :)
